Once notifications arrive, check each requested URL and its referrer before fixing a link or adding a redirect; many logged requests are not problems that need redirecting.
Choose a plugin that matches what you need to monitor
For incoming requests to URLs that return 404 errors, use a 404-monitoring plugin with a request log and email notifications. The 404 to 301 listing describes logging, alerts after a configurable number of hits, scheduled email reports, request filters, and path exclusions. Check the current listing and plugin interface before installing, because features and settings can change.
A broken-link checker addresses a related but different problem: finding links in your site’s content that may be broken. Broken Link Notifier describes checking links as visitors load pages and sending notices through email and collaboration services. Choose based on whether you need to monitor requests reaching nonexistent URLs, links published on your site, or both.
Set up 404 email notifications
- Install a monitoring plugin. In your WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for a 404-monitoring plugin, and review its current compatibility and feature information. You can also use its official WordPress.org listing.
- Enable 404 logging. Open the plugin’s settings and turn on its 404 log or monitoring feature. The exact menu labels vary by plugin and version.
- Choose how often to be notified. In 404 to 301, the listing describes configurable hit-threshold alerts and scheduled email reports that can be daily, weekly, or monthly. Threshold alerts notify you when a URL receives enough requests; scheduled reports collect activity into a digest. Its listing says reports can include a CSV attachment. Confirm the available options in the current plugin interface.
- Choose recipients and review filters. Set the notification recipient or recipients if the plugin offers that control. Check whether you can filter by request type or referrer, exclude paths, or adjust how WordPress URL guessing is handled. These controls affect which requests appear in your log and alerts.
- Verify delivery on your site. Send or trigger a test notification if the plugin provides that option, then confirm the message reaches the intended inbox. Plugin feature descriptions do not establish that mail is configured or delivered successfully on your particular host.
Read an alert before taking action
A 404 log can include a broken internal link, a removed page, a mistyped URL, a missing image or other asset, an old link from another site, or an automated probe. Use the requested URL, referrer, request type, and frequency when available to identify the likely cause.

- Broken internal link: Update the link on the page that refers to the missing URL.
- Page or resource removed by mistake: Restore it if it is still needed.
- Legitimate old URL with a replacement: Add a redirect only when there is a relevant destination.
- Missing asset: Restore the file or correct the reference if the image, script, or other resource should still load.
- Irrelevant or suspicious request: Use available filters or exclusions where appropriate rather than creating a redirect without a useful destination.
A logged request does not automatically mean a published page is broken. Redirecting every nonexistent URL to the homepage can send visitors to unrelated content; use a redirect when it takes visitors to a genuinely suitable replacement.
Investigate site-wide 404s as a configuration problem
If many valid pages suddenly return 404 errors, do not treat each URL as an isolated broken link. WordPress’s common-errors documentation identifies server rewrite configuration, including Apache mod_rewrite, as one area to investigate when pretty permalinks fail. Check permalink and server rewrite settings before adding a batch of individual redirects.

Check logging, privacy, and plugin fit
Logging requests can retain information about visitors and their activity. The 404 to 301 listing describes controls to mask or omit IP addresses and exclude paths. Review the plugin’s current controls and your site’s privacy and retention requirements when deciding what to log and how long to keep it.
Before activating another redirect or monitoring plugin, check whether its functions overlap with tools already on your site. The 404 to 301 listing mentions plugin-conflict checks, but compatibility depends on your WordPress version and configuration; confirm current details for your setup.

Its listing does not establish that its setup steps or controls match those in 404 to 301, so compare the current feature descriptions rather than assuming they work the same way.
