Yahoo does not provide one universal “Classic Mail” switch for every account. On desktop, some accounts still show Go back to the old Yahoo Mail; others can use Basic Mail, which is a separate, more limited interface. If neither option appears, Yahoo has likely removed the older version from that account.
First, identify which version you want

Return to old Yahoo Mail on a desktop
- Open mail.yahoo.com and sign in.
- Look in the upper-right corner of the Yahoo Mail page.
- Click Go back to the old Yahoo Mail.
- Follow any confirmation prompt Yahoo displays.
This is the current Yahoo-documented route. Older guides often say to find the rollback under Settings, but that is not the current path. The option is account-dependent: if Go back to the old Yahoo Mail is missing, Yahoo says the old desktop version is no longer available for that account.
Use Basic Mail instead
Basic Mail may be useful if the full Yahoo Mail interface is slow, fails to load, or is incompatible with your browser. It is not a restoration of Classic Yahoo Mail. Yahoo removes or changes several full-interface features, including filters, themes, photo slideshows, the formatting toolbar, and drag-and-drop attachments or GIFs.
From New Yahoo Mail
- Click the More options icon.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom-left of the Settings page.
- Click Switch to Basic Mail.
- Click Switch to Basic Mail again to confirm.
If the link is not present, Yahoo is not offering Basic Mail for that account at that time.

From old or Classic Yahoo Mail
- Click the Settings icon.
- Select More settings.
- At the bottom-left, click Switch to Basic Mail.
- Click Switch to Basic Mail again.
Do not confuse this route with the old-interface rollback. In the classic desktop layout, Settings icon → More settings is also where Yahoo provides controls such as Viewing email, Message Layout, and Inbox Spacing. Basic Mail is a separate simplified version.
Return from Basic Mail to the full version
- In Basic Mail, click Switch to the Standard Version of Yahoo Mail in the upper-right corner.
- Clear your browser cache.
- Close and restart the browser.
- Open Yahoo Mail again.
Clearing the cache matters when Yahoo keeps reopening Basic Mail after you select the standard version. The switch may also fail if the browser cannot run the scripts required by the full interface.
Why Yahoo may be showing Basic Mail automatically
Yahoo lists several conditions that can cause Basic Mail to appear:

- The screen resolution is too low. Yahoo says Yahoo Mail is optimized for 1024×786.
- JavaScript is disabled or malfunctioning.
- The browser is unsupported or outdated.
- The internet connection has low bandwidth.
Before trying the standard version again, update the browser, enable JavaScript, temporarily test without extensions that block scripts, and try a stable connection. If the display is small, maximize the browser window or use a larger screen. These steps can restore the full interface, but they cannot restore Classic Mail if Yahoo has removed it for the account.
What to do when the rollback option is missing
- Check that you are using Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser, not the mobile app.
- Look specifically in the upper-right corner for Go back to the old Yahoo Mail.
- Check More options → Settings for Switch to Basic Mail if you only need a lighter interface.
- Try the browser and compatibility fixes above if Yahoo is automatically loading Basic Mail.
- If neither option exists, stop looking for a hidden Settings switch. Yahoo’s current help instructions say the old version is not available for that account when the rollback link is absent.
Can you get the old Yahoo Mail app back?
No. Yahoo says there is no supported way to switch the Yahoo Mail app back to its old interface on iOS or Android. Avoid unofficial APK files, modified apps, and websites promising a “Classic Yahoo Mail” download; they can expose your Yahoo password or install malware.
If your phone uses an older operating system and can no longer download the Yahoo Mail app, Yahoo’s documented fallback is to open the device browser and visit mail.yahoo.com. The browser version may still work, depending on the device and browser.

Useful classic-layout settings, if you still have access
If Yahoo has returned your account to the old desktop interface, its documented settings include:

These controls belong to the classic desktop interface. They should not be treated as evidence that Basic Mail and Classic Mail are the same product.

To try to restore the old desktop Yahoo Mail, sign in at mail.yahoo.com and click Go back to the old Yahoo Mail in the upper-right corner. If that link is absent, Yahoo does not currently offer Classic Mail for the account. You can still try Basic Mail through the Settings menu, but it is a stripped-down alternative, not the old full interface. On mobile, the old Yahoo Mail app cannot be restored through a supported method.

Can everyone switch back to Classic Yahoo Mail?
No. Yahoo only shows the Go back to the old Yahoo Mail option for accounts that are still eligible. If it is missing from the upper-right corner, Yahoo says the old desktop version is unavailable for that account.
Is Basic Mail the same as Classic Yahoo Mail?

Where is the Classic Yahoo Mail switch in Settings?
The current Yahoo instructions place the old-interface switch in the upper-right corner as Go back to the old Yahoo Mail, not under Settings. Settings can contain the separate Switch to Basic Mail option.
Why does Yahoo Mail keep opening in Basic Mail?
Yahoo may detect a low screen resolution, disabled or broken JavaScript, an unsupported browser, or a slow connection. After switching to the standard version, clear the browser cache, restart the browser, and try again.
Can I restore the old Yahoo Mail app on Android or iPhone?
No. Yahoo says the old app interface cannot be restored on iOS or Android. If the app is unavailable on an older operating system, use the device browser and visit mail.yahoo.com.
The Bottom Line
Use the upper-right Go back to the old Yahoo Mail link if Yahoo still offers it for your account. If it is missing, Classic Mail cannot be forced back. Basic Mail is the only documented lighter desktop alternative, and the old mobile app interface is not recoverable through a supported method.
