To get a theme in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Themes. Choose a built-in theme or select Browse themes to find more in Microsoft Store, then select a theme to apply it. You can also adjust its background, colors, sounds, and mouse cursor, and save your combination as a custom theme.
Apply a built-in or Microsoft Store theme
- Open Settings > Personalization > Themes. You can also search Settings for Change my theme to find the setting. Microsoft’s theme instructions describe both routes.
- Select one of the themes already available on your PC, or choose Browse themes to explore digital themes in Microsoft Store.
- Select the theme you want to use to apply it.
A theme brings together appearance elements such as desktop background pictures, window colors, sounds, and the mouse cursor. Applying a ready-made theme is the quickest option; changing individual elements lets you create a combination that suits your preferences.
Customize the parts of a theme
From Settings > Personalization > Themes, open the controls for Background, Color, Sounds, or Mouse cursor to adjust those parts of the current setup.
Choose a desktop background
For background controls, go to Settings > Personalization > Background. Windows offers Picture, Solid Color, Slideshow, and Windows spotlight. With Picture, you can browse for an image saved on your device. See Microsoft’s background instructions for the documented options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Set colors and appearance
Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors to choose Light, Dark, or Custom mode and adjust accent-color settings. Some apps control their appearance separately, and not every app supports dark mode. Microsoft explains these controls in its Windows color guidance.
Adjust sounds and the mouse cursor
Use the Sounds and Mouse cursor options associated with the theme to change those elements. These controls are separate from choosing a background or color mode, so you can adjust one part without replacing the whole theme.

Save, share, or remove a custom theme
Save a theme for later
- After making your changes, return to Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Select Save and enter a name for the theme.
- Select the saved theme whenever you want to apply that combination again.
Share or delete a saved theme
On the Themes page, right-click a saved theme and choose Save theme for sharing to create a .deskthemepack file. To remove a saved theme, right-click it and choose Delete. Windows’ default themes cannot be deleted. The available save and sharing options are described in Microsoft’s theme instructions.
Use a contrast theme for visibility
If your goal is improved visibility rather than a decorative theme, Windows has separate contrast-theme controls under Settings > Accessibility. You can customize colors there and save a modified contrast theme. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing color contrast.
