To get an Irish IP address, connect to a VPN server location in Ireland, then check the location reported for your new IP. Choose Dublin if the VPN offers it. This changes the IP address websites see for traffic routed through the VPN, but it does not guarantee that a streaming service, bank, or other site will allow access.
Get an Irish IP address with a VPN
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider. When you connect to a server in Ireland, sites generally see the VPN server’s IP address rather than your usual public IP for that connection. The method described by Matched.ie and Proton VPN is to use the provider’s app and select Ireland.
- Choose a VPN with Ireland in its current location list. Check the provider’s server list before subscribing; locations and service terms can change.
- Install the official app on the device you plan to use and sign in.
- Select Ireland. If the app offers a city-level choice, select Dublin.
- Connect to the server. Wait for the app to confirm that the VPN connection is active.
- Check the IP location. Visit an IP-location checker and confirm that it reports Ireland. If the result has not changed, reconnect and refresh the check.
Proton VPN’s official Ireland page says to download its app on desktop or mobile and select a server in Ireland. It lists support for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and Chromebook; these are Proton’s own current service statements, not independent compatibility tests. Proton VPN’s Ireland server page.
What an Irish IP can—and cannot—do
An Irish IP may be useful when a site or service uses IP location to determine what it displays or whether it permits a connection. Matched.ie names RTÉ Player, Virgin Media Player, TG4, banking, Revenue, and GAAGO as examples of Irish services or content that may be location-sensitive. Those examples are not guarantees that a VPN will work with a particular account or service.

- A bank or government service may apply additional security checks or decline a VPN connection. An Irish IP does not guarantee acceptance.
Check the target service’s rules and use its official support channels if you need help with access. The location displayed by an IP checker confirms only what that checker reports; it does not prove that every site will treat the connection as Irish.
Ireland server versus Dublin location
Some VPN apps let you choose a country only; others expose a city such as Dublin. Matched.ie distinguishes physical servers in Ireland from virtual locations mapped to Ireland and recommends a physical Irish server for the use cases it discusses. The providers’ pages cited here do not independently verify each provider’s server infrastructure, so check the provider’s own explanation if physical server location matters to you.

Free VPNs and other options
Matched.ie says most free VPNs do not offer an Ireland location and warns that some free VPNs, proxies, and browser extensions may be slow, blocked, unreliable, or insecure. These are the guide’s general assessments, not results from testing those products. If you consider a free service, check whether Ireland is actually available and review how it handles your data before connecting.

The supported solution here is digital VPN software and a network service. A router, adapter, or other physical networking product is not necessary to obtain an Irish IP address.
If the IP check or target site does not work
- The checker still shows your usual country: reconnect to the VPN, refresh the checker, and, if available, choose a specific Dublin location. These are troubleshooting suggestions from Matched.ie, not guaranteed fixes.
- The checker shows Ireland but a site refuses access: the site may block or detect the VPN connection. Matched.ie suggests trying another Irish server; that may help with some connection issues but cannot guarantee access.
- The site behaves differently after reconnecting: check the browser again after the VPN reconnects. A location check and the site’s decision are separate outcomes.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ireland in the current server list | An Irish IP requires a connection to a location the provider currently offers. |
| Dublin city selection | Useful if you want to select Dublin specifically; not every app exposes city-level choices. |
| Supported devices | Confirm that the provider has an official app for the device you plan to use. |
| Privacy policy and independent audits | Review what the provider says it collects and whether relevant audit documentation is available. |
| Price and refund terms | Check the provider’s current checkout and terms; promotional offers and guarantees can change. |
| Rules for your target service | A VPN connection does not require a service to permit access. |
As of 4 October 2026, Proton VPN’s Ireland page advertises 10 Gbps servers and a 30-day money-back guarantee. These are Proton’s own claims, not independent speed findings or a recommendation. Confirm current terms on the provider’s page before purchase. Proton VPN’s Ireland server page.
