1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor the most accurate internet speed test you can run at home, connect a computer to your router with Ethernet, close open apps, pause other household internet use, and repeat the test under similar conditions. If you want to measure your everyday Wi-Fi experience instead, test over Wi-Fi in the room you use and note that detail. A speed test measures the path between your device and the test service at that moment—not just your ISP’s connection.
Choose what you want the test to measure
For a useful reading, decide whether you are checking the internet service reaching your home or the Wi-Fi experience at a particular spot. Those are different questions: a wired result reduces Wi-Fi as a variable, while a Wi-Fi result includes the wireless link between your device and router.
- Check the service connection: connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet, if available.
- Check everyday Wi-Fi: test on Wi-Fi in your usual room and record that you used Wi-Fi and where.
Google Fiber recommends Ethernet for maximum test speed. Its advice is useful for its customers, but the underlying distinction applies broadly: a wireless test reflects both the internet connection and local Wi-Fi conditions. (Google Fiber: Use Speedtest by Ookla; Cloudflare: How does Cloudflare’s Speed Test really work?)
Prepare and run the test
- Reduce competing traffic. Close open applications and pause other devices’ internet activity during the test. Google Fiber recommends both steps to reduce interference. (Google Fiber Help)
- Use a test service that fits your purpose. Cloudflare points home users to speed.cloudflare.com. Google Fiber recommends the Speedtest by Ookla app for its customers and provides server-selection guidance on its support page. These recommendations do not establish a universal winner: tools may use different methods, servers and metrics.
- Run several measurements. Repeat the test under comparable conditions instead of treating the highest reading as your normal speed. Cloudflare notes that measurements can vary. Record the connection type, device, test service or server if shown, and approximate time so that you can compare readings fairly. (Cloudflare: Test your home network performance)
- Review more than download speed. Note upload speed and any available latency, jitter or packet-loss measures. Which metrics matter most depends on what you do online.
App or browser: which should you use?
For ordinary connections, either may give a useful result, but the evidence here does not establish that every app or browser test is interchangeable. For very fast service, follow the test provider’s guidance and be cautious about browser-based readings.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Google Fiber says most web browsers cap out at around 3 Gbps and warns that browser tests might not accurately represent connections above 3 Gbps; it recommends its app for the most accurate results. This is Google Fiber’s guidance, not a universal limit for every browser or test service. (Google Fiber Help)
Understand what the numbers measure
A test’s result depends on the whole path from your device to the test infrastructure. The device, browser, local Wi-Fi, test server and network conditions can all affect it. Cloudflare describes its own Speed Test as focused on realistic connection quality rather than peak bandwidth, and notes that results can reflect browser and Wi-Fi bottlenecks as well as the access network. As Cloudflare authors Lai Yi Ohlsen and Carlos Rodrigues put it, “For Cloudflare’s Speed Test, we set out to measure your connection’s quality and what it realistically provides, rather than focusing on peak bandwidth.” That describes Cloudflare’s approach; it is not an independent ranking of speed-test services.
| Metric | What it tells you | Why it can matter |
|---|---|---|
| Download throughput | How quickly data is received from the test endpoint. | Relevant when receiving data, such as streaming or downloading files. |
| Upload throughput | How quickly data is sent to the endpoint. | Relevant when sending files or sharing your connection upstream. |
| Unloaded latency | Round-trip delay when there is no significant transfer, as described in Cloudflare One diagnostics. | Helps describe baseline responsiveness. |
| Loaded latency | Round-trip delay while downloading or uploading. | Shows how responsive the connection remains during active traffic. |
| Jitter | Variation in latency over time. | Consistency matters for real-time activities. |
| Packet loss | A connection-quality measure included in Cloudflare’s AIM and home-test documentation. | Can help identify quality problems not captured by throughput alone. |
Cloudflare’s documentation discusses these metrics and relates connection quality to activities such as streaming, gaming and real-time communication. No single metric—or universal score threshold—determines whether a connection is good for every use. (Cloudflare Speed documentation; Cloudflare Aggregated Internet Measurement)

What to do when results differ
Wired is much faster than Wi-Fi
That difference points to the wireless path as something to investigate before blaming the ISP. Try testing in another room or nearer the router, and compare again under similar conditions. A difference alone does not prove a specific fault or mean that you need new equipment.
Repeated results vary
Speed measurements are not perfectly consistent. Compare readings taken with the same device, connection type, test service and similar household activity; do not treat a single peak as a guaranteed everyday speed. (Cloudflare: Test your home network performance)

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
One result is unexpectedly low
Repeat the measurement after checking for other household traffic and, if possible, compare a wired test with a Wi-Fi test. Because the device, browser, Wi-Fi and test path can affect the number, one low reading by itself does not establish that the ISP is under-delivering.
