First decide whether you need an expert to identify the specimen, verify a gemstone’s characteristics, determine its monetary value, or do more than one of these. Those are different services: a lab report documents technical findings, while an appraiser estimates value for a stated purpose. For an unknown rock or mineral, arrange an in-person examination; a photo or home test cannot reliably authenticate it.

Decide what you need verified

Before contacting anyone, write down where the specimen came from, whether it is loose or mounted, what identification or claim you want checked, and why you need an answer. Personal curiosity, insurance, an estate, a sale, and a dispute may call for different documentation or valuation assumptions.

  • Identification: What rock, mineral, or gemstone is it?
  • Gemstone analysis: What characteristics can a laboratory examine and document?
  • Appraisal: What monetary value is appropriate for a defined purpose and market context?

Do not clean, scratch, or apply chemicals to a specimen that may be valuable or fragile before asking the receiving expert how to handle it.

Where to take an unknown rock or mineral

For an ordinary rock or mineral specimen, seek a close, in-person examination. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that photographs make identification difficult because a specimen needs to be examined from different perspectives. It recommends taking it to a local source where it can be handled and examined closely.

Possible places to ask include:

  • Your state geological survey
  • A natural science museum
  • A college or university geology department
  • A rockshop
  • A local gem and mineral club or rockhounding club
  • A gem-show vendor

These are starting points, not a guarantee that every location offers formal identification or a written report. Ask what the provider can examine, what documentation it supplies, and whether it charges a fee.

For a gemstone, separate laboratory analysis from appraisal

Ask a gemological laboratory about identification

If the item is a cut or polished gemstone and you need its characteristics documented, contact a gemological laboratory and ask whether it accepts that material. Confirm that the report will address the particular feature or claim you need checked. GIA describes a colored-stone examination that records measurements, uses microscopy and testing to determine identity and detect treatments, and includes a second gemologist independently performing necessary observations and tests.

A laboratory report is not a valuation. GIA says its reports are not certificates, guarantees, valuations, or appraisals, and do not state an appraisal value. It also says it does not certify or appraise material submitted for analysis. Read the proposed report scope before submitting the stone.

Hire an independent appraiser for a monetary value

If you need a value, tell the appraiser the intended use before work begins. Insurance replacement, estate valuation, equitable distribution, and a likely cash resale can require different assumptions. Request a written report describing the item, its quality, and the appraiser’s value conclusion.

GIA says this list is informational, not an endorsement; check a candidate’s current credentials and suitability yourself.

Why photos and home tests are not authentication

A photograph may help someone offer a preliminary opinion, but it does not replace close examination. Likewise, scratching glass does not prove that a colorless stone is diamond: many minerals can scratch glass, and other gemological tests are needed. A loupe or consumer test kit may support preliminary observation, but should not be treated as definitive authentication or a monetary appraisal.
