To request a refund for recalled groceries bought at Walmart, first match the exact product and package details to the recall notice, then follow that notice’s safety and return instructions. Walmart’s U.S. policy says some recalled items qualify for a refund, return, or store credit; some may be refunded without being returned, while other cases must be handled with the manufacturer or Marketplace seller.
1. Confirm that your exact package is part of the recall

Go to Walmart’s Product Recalls page and find the notice for the food. Walmart says its recall index is not all-inclusive, so also check the manufacturer or regulator notice linked there.

Compare the notice with the package. Check the product name, brand, size, UPC, lot or date code, best-by date, and any stated sale geography. A recall may apply only to particular packages or locations, not everything sold under a brand.

Follow the notice’s safety directions before pursuing a refund. Do not eat food the notice identifies as unsafe, and do not transport it if the notice says to discard it.

For example, an FDA-posted company notice dated September 3, 2026, says consumers should not consume Great Value Organic Triple Berry 10 OZ with lot code 6040 01-6; it directs them to discard that lot or return it to Walmart for a full refund. That instruction applies to the identified lot, not to other recalled groceries.
2. Check who sold the grocery and what remedy the notice offers
Walmart’s U.S. return policy says some recalled items may qualify for a return, refund, or store credit, while other products may require working with the manufacturer. Some items may be eligible for a refund without being returned. The individual recall notice controls what to do with the specific food.

Sold by Walmart: Follow the notice’s stated refund or return route. If it does not explain how to request a refund, contact Walmart through its return or customer-service channels.

Sold by a Marketplace seller: The remedy may differ from Walmart-sold products. Follow the notice or contact the seller or manufacturer.

Paid with WIC or SNAP: Walmart’s policy lists exclusions for these benefits, but its public guidance does not establish the exact refund remedy for recalled groceries bought with them. Ask Walmart and the applicable benefit administrator rather than assuming a particular refund form.

3. Start the refund based on where you bought it
Store purchase
Bring the receipt if you have it. Walmart’s normal return process may be able to look up a store purchase using the payment card. If you no longer have the receipt, ask Walmart whether it can locate the purchase; a no-receipt return may require government-issued photo ID and verification.
Online order or delivery
Use the order number or find the purchase in Walmart.com or the Walmart app, then follow the recall notice and the available return options. Walmart says fresh grocery categories covered by its Fresh Guarantee require a receipt for a refund. It may be able to look up an online order using the phone number or email associated with it.

Perishable online orders cannot be mailed back. Walmart directs customers to start a refund through Walmart.com or the app. The Fresh Guarantee covers fresh produce, meat, bakery, deli, dairy, and frozen goods; its receipt requirement is separate from the instructions in an individual recall notice. 4. Keep the confirmation and allow time for the refund
Save the recall notice and any refund confirmation until the credit appears. Walmart says refunds to the original debit or credit card may take up to seven business days. If the original card cannot be refunded, Walmart says a store purchase may be credited to a Walmart Gift Card or Walmart Balance, while an online purchase may be credited to Walmart Balance. Other payment types have their own timelines. If the expected refund does not appear, contact Walmart with your order details or proof of purchase.
Watch for fake recall messages
Walmart says it does not send text messages about recalls. Verify any message by going directly to Walmart’s official recall page, and do not share personal or payment information in response to an unsolicited recall text.
