Windows does not include a built-in checksum command in File Explorer’s right-click menu. For a right-click workflow, use a shell-integrated utility such as 7-Zip if its installed menu offers a hash command; in Windows 11, check Show more options. For a built-in method, run PowerShell’s Get-FileHash, which calculates SHA-256 by default and can also calculate MD5.
Choose a method: right-click utility or PowerShell

Microsoft documents no built-in File Explorer checksum menu item. Windows 11 can show older context-menu commands under Show more options, but whether a particular extension appears depends on the app developer. 7-Zip describes its Windows program as integrating with Windows Shell and lists Windows 11 support; its site does not specify a universal hash-command label or guarantee that the option is enabled on every installation. Microsoft explains Windows 11’s streamlined context menu, and 7-Zip’s official site describes its Windows utility.
Get a checksum from the right-click menu
- Install a shell-integrated utility such as 7-Zip, then check the app’s available context-menu options. The exact label and whether a hash option is present depend on the installed app and its configuration.
- In File Explorer, right-click the file you want to check. On Windows 11, select Show more options if the command is not visible in the first menu.
- Choose the utility’s hash or checksum command, if available, and select the algorithm you need. If the utility does not offer a hash command, use PowerShell instead.
- Compare the displayed result with the checksum published for that exact file by a source you trust.
Calculate the hash with PowerShell
Open PowerShell and run one of these commands, replacing the example path with the file’s actual path:
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:Pathtofile.iso"
This calculates SHA-256 by default. To calculate MD5, specify the algorithm:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:Pathtofile.iso" -Algorithm MD5
-LiteralPath treats the path literally, so characters that could otherwise be interpreted as wildcards are not treated as patterns. The output identifies the algorithm, hash, and file path. Microsoft documents MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, and SHA512 as supported algorithm options in the current Get-FileHash reference.

Which checksum algorithm should you use?
- For security-sensitive verification, use SHA-256 when the publisher provides it. It is PowerShell’s default and is within the SHA-2 family that NIST recommends for secure hash applications.
- Use MD5 only for simple change validation, such as matching a legacy checksum or detecting accidental changes—not to protect against deliberate tampering.
- A matching checksum does not prove a file is safe. It shows that the file’s digest matches the reference value. That comparison is useful only if the reference checksum itself comes from a trustworthy source.
Microsoft cautions that MD5 and SHA1 are no longer considered secure and should be limited to simple change validation, not files that need protection from attack or tampering. NIST describes SHA-2 as including SHA-256 and encourages SHA-256 at minimum for interoperability where secure hash functions are required. Get the expected checksum from the publisher’s official download page or another authenticated channel associated with the file. Confirm that the checksum is for the same file and version, then compare the full value with the hash you calculated. If the values differ, do not treat the file as verified: check that you selected the correct file and algorithm, and obtain a fresh copy from the trusted source before trying again.
