You can generate instrumental music with AI by describing the track you need, choosing an instrumental option in a music-generation service, listening to the result, and revising your description until the music suits its intended use. Before publishing or monetizing a track, check the service’s current terms: permission to use output commercially and copyright ownership are separate questions.

How to generate an instrumental track

  1. Choose the track’s purpose. Decide whether it will sit under a podcast, video, livestream, game session, or presentation. The purpose helps define how prominent, energetic, or unobtrusive the music should be. Suno’s AI instrumental generator guide uses these kinds of contexts as examples.
  2. Write a specific direction. Include the scene or use, style, mood, instruments, and tempo or energy. A practical structure is: use or scene + genre/style + mood + instruments + tempo/energy + instrumental.
  3. Select the instrumental option. In Suno’s documented workflow, choose the instrumental setting in the generation interface, then generate the track.
  4. Listen and revise. Note what works and what does not: perhaps the mood is too bright, the lead instrument is wrong, or the pulse is too slow. Revise the direction to address those points and generate again. Suno describes this prompt-and-revision process as a way to change the feel, instrumentation, or tempo.
  5. Choose for the placement. Keep the version that best serves the project. For narration, listen for whether the music leaves room for speech; for video or a game, consider whether its energy fits the scene or activity. These are listening judgments, not guaranteed platform controls.
  6. Check the terms before release. Confirm that the service and plan allow your intended distribution and monetization. Then consider copyright separately; a commercial-use permission is not a finding that the track qualifies for copyright protection.

How to write a useful instrumental prompt

Specific, compatible details give the generator a clearer target than a broad request such as “make relaxing music.” For example:

Instrumental ambient piano and soft strings for a reflective travel-film montage, gentle pulse, spacious and calm, gradual lift, no vocals.

This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested formula or a guarantee of a particular result. Suno recommends describing dimensions such as style, mood, instruments, tempo, energy, and scene, then revising the description when you want a different result. An Associated Press report on a Suno demonstration offered another illustration: “Afrobeat, flute, drums, 90 beats per minute.” Treat that as a reported example, not an official prompt recipe.

Adapt the direction to the job

  • Music under speech: describe a restrained arrangement and moderate energy, then listen with spoken audio if available. Check that the lead instruments do not compete with a voice.
  • Music for a visual scene: name the scene and its emotional direction, such as a calm travel montage or a tense game sequence. If the result feels mismatched, change the mood or energy in the next prompt.
  • Music for a specific sound: name the instruments you want to hear. If the result uses an unsuitable lead, revise the instrument direction rather than assuming one generation will follow every detail exactly.

What to expect when you iterate

A prompt sets a direction; it does not guarantee an exact arrangement. Generate a first version, identify one or two meaningful changes, and revise the prompt around them. For instance, if a track has the right instruments but feels too busy, keep the instrument direction and ask for a calmer, more spacious feel. Changing several unrelated details at once can make it harder to tell which revision helped.

Compare versions by their usefulness for the intended placement, not just by whether they sound impressive on their own. A polished but busy instrumental may be a poor fit beneath narration, while a simpler track may work well as background. The available sources describe the workflow but do not establish a controlled sound-quality ranking among services.

Check service terms before using or monetizing the track

Permissions vary by service, plan, and how you use the tool. Do not assume that terms from one generator apply to another, or that a subscription automatically covers every track you made previously.

Service or situation What the cited guidance says What to check
Suno paid subscription Suno says commercial-use rights apply to songs made while subscribed. Its guidance describes this as permission to attempt monetization without Suno claiming a share of royalties; it distinguishes that permission from copyright ownership. See Suno’s paid-subscription guidance and Suno’s copyright explainer. Confirm the applicable plan and that the track was made while the subscription was active. Review current terms for the intended release.
Suno free plan Suno says free-plan songs are for non-commercial use, and subscribing later does not by default grant retroactive commercial-use licensing for those songs. See Suno’s copyright explainer and Suno’s distribution guidance. Check the track’s creation circumstances and ask Suno about any licensing route if you want to use an older free-plan song commercially.
Stable Audio service Stability AI says commercial use is permitted subject to its Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. Its examples include monetized social and video content, advertising, podcasts, client projects, apps, games, and digital distribution. See Stable Audio licensing guidance. Review the current service terms and policy for your particular use rather than assuming every output or use is covered.
Self-hosted Stable Audio models under the Community License Stability AI says users exceeding $1 million in annual revenue, individually or together with affiliates, cannot rely on the Community License for the identified self-hosted models and must request separate licensing. This threshold applies to that self-hosted licensing situation, not to all Stable Audio services or plans. See Stable Audio licensing guidance. Determine whether you are using a covered self-hosted model and whether the Community License applies to your organization and revenue.

Commercial permission and copyright are different

A service can permit a user to monetize a track without establishing that the user owns copyright in it. Suno’s Help Center says music made entirely with AI would not qualify for copyright protection because a human did not write the lyrics or music; it also says writing the prompt does not constitute creation of the song. Suno notes that treatment can vary by region or registrar. These are Suno’s statements, not universal legal advice; see its copyright explainer.

For the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 announcement on its AI report says generative-AI output can be protected only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. It explains that qualifying human contribution may include human-authored material perceptible in the output or creative arrangements and modifications, but not the mere provision of prompts. This is U.S. guidance; other jurisdictions may take a different approach. Read the Copyright Office announcement for its summary.
