To use Black Forest Labs’ FLUX MCP from Claude Code, add its hosted server with claude mcp add --transport http FLUX https://mcp.bfl.ai, then complete BFL’s browser sign-in and choose the organization that will be billed. After setup, you can ask Claude Code to generate images or refine an image with a prompt; BFL says usage is billed to the selected organization at its API rates.
What the FLUX MCP does
The FLUX MCP connects Claude Code to Black Forest Labs’ hosted image-generation service, so you can request image work in natural language rather than writing API code or pasting API keys into a chat. BFL’s help center describes the service as supporting image generation, editing, and browsing from MCP-compatible apps. See BFL’s FLUX MCP overview.
BFL’s repository documents a generate_image tool for text-to-image creation, prompted edits, multi-reference composition, style transfer, inpainting-style edits, and outpainting. It also describes generating one to eight images in parallel, creating variations from a previous request, and browsing recent generation history. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every prompt or account configuration will produce a particular result.
Connect Claude Code to the hosted server

When a browser window opens, sign in to your BFL account and select the organization to bill. BFL says OAuth tokens refresh automatically.

In Claude Code, run
claude mcp listto check that FLUX appears. Enter/mcpto inspect its status or reauthenticate if necessary. -
Confirm that the selected BFL organization has credits before requesting paid generations. BFL says FLUX MCP usage is charged directly to that organization at the same rates as its API. Check BFL’s current pricing page rather than relying on an older quoted rate.

This setup uses BFL’s hosted service at https://mcp.bfl.ai. It is distinct from third-party projects with similar names and from unrelated products called Flux.
Generate an image or refine an existing one
Start with a clear generation request
Describe the subject and intended result in Claude Code. BFL’s repository gives this example: “Generate 4 editorial portrait variants — varied lighting, palette, and mood.” The request asks for four options with specific dimensions of variation; it is an example, not a promise that each output will differ in exactly those ways.
Ask for a change to an image
To refine an image, attach or otherwise provide it through the client’s supported image workflow, then describe the change. BFL’s repository uses “Add a camel on the sand” as an editing example. You can also use the documented multi-reference and style-transfer workflows where the task calls for them.

Prompt-based editing does not guarantee that every unmentioned detail will remain unchanged. Inspect the result and request another edit or variation if preserving a specific feature matters.
Browse prior work
The repository also documents image variations and recent-generation history. For example, it gives the natural-language request “Show me my recent FLUX generations.”

Write prompts that are easier to refine
BFL’s repository recommends putting the main subject first, describing lighting, using hex color values when color precision matters, and quoting the exact text that should appear in the image. It advises against negative prompts and recommends iterating from generated results with variations or edits.
- Lead with the subject: state what the image is about before adding secondary details.
- Specify visual choices: describe lighting and give a hex color value when a precise color matters.
- Quote rendered text: identify the exact words to include rather than describing them loosely.
- Refine from the output: request a variation or targeted edit after reviewing what the model produced.
The repository exposes specialist prompting guides through its tools. It did not include a general FLUX 3 prompting guide in the material reviewed for this article, so no FLUX 3-specific prompt rules are asserted here.

FLUX tools do not appear
Run claude mcp list to see whether the server is registered, then use /mcp to inspect its status or reauthenticate. If the connection still fails, BFL documents removing and adding the server again:

Browser sign-in does not complete
First use requires browser-based BFL sign-in. A blocked pop-up or unfinished sign-in can interrupt the connection; allow the browser flow to open and finish authentication, then check status in /mcp.
An attached-image edit fails
The client must be allowed to upload the image to BFL. BFL’s repository also notes that outbound HTTPS restrictions in a sandbox can block uploads; it suggests allowing *.bfl.ai or using a public URL where appropriate. Only use a public URL for an image you are comfortable making accessible that way.
Generation is slow or billing fails
BFL notes that larger batches, flux2_max, and complex edits may take longer, but does not provide a fixed generation-time estimate. If billing fails, check that the selected organization has credits. You can disconnect and reconnect to select a different organization.
These troubleshooting steps come from BFL’s documentation and may vary with Claude Code version, network policy, and account setup.
