Start with Settings > General > iPad Storage to see what is using space, then choose an action that fits the content: offload apps you may use again, review offline downloads, or optimize photos through iCloud if you have enough cloud storage. Be careful with synced photos: deleting one from an iPad using iCloud Photos also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Check what is using iPad storage first

  1. Open Settings > General > iPad Storage.
  2. Review the available space, any recommendations, and the list of apps with their storage use.
  3. Note the largest categories before removing anything. The figures and recommendations are specific to your iPad; the screen does not promise how much space a particular action will recover.

iPad storage is the built-in capacity of the device. iCloud storage is a separate account quota. An iPad can have room left while iCloud is full, or the reverse.

Offload apps you might use again

Offload App removes the app itself to free the storage it uses while keeping its documents and data. Its icon remains on the Home Screen, and you can tap it to reinstall the app. Reinstalling requires the app to remain available; a network connection may also be needed.

Deleting an app is different: it removes the app and its related data. If you want to preserve that data, choose offloading rather than deletion. Apple also provides an automatic option at Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. When enabled, iPad can remove unused apps while keeping their data.

Review downloads, files, and message attachments

Apps are only one source of local storage. Apple identifies downloaded shows and other videos, Messages conversations and attachments, iCloud Drive documents, and offline files in apps such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote as places to review.

  • Streaming apps: Remove downloaded episodes or films you have finished or can download again.
  • Files: Open the Downloads view to review downloaded files. You can delete, move, copy, or share files from there.
  • iCloud Drive: If the interface offers Remove Download, use it when you want to clear the local copy but keep the cloud file. Do not delete a cloud document unless you intend to remove it from iCloud.
  • Messages: Review large attachments and conversations before removing them, especially if they contain material you want to keep.
  • Other apps: Check for offline maps, music, documents, or other saved content inside the app that created it.

Free up space without deleting photos

Use Optimize iPad Storage with iCloud Photos

If you use iCloud Photos and have sufficient iCloud capacity, Optimize iPad Storage can keep full-resolution originals in iCloud while retaining smaller, space-saving versions on the iPad. Apple says optimization is on by default when iCloud Photos is used. To confirm the option shown on your iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos; labels can vary by iPadOS release.

This approach depends on iCloud Photos syncing and available iCloud storage. It is not the same as keeping every full-resolution original locally.

Understand the risk before deleting synced photos

When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device deletes it from the other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple says deleted items normally remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, but if iCloud storage is exceeded, they may be removed immediately without recovery from that album. Verify that important photos are backed up or otherwise retained before deleting them.

Keep a separate copy if you do not want cloud optimization

If you prefer to retain media outside iCloud Photos, Apple documents transferring photos and videos to a computer. The appropriate transfer method depends on the devices involved; do not assume a particular external drive or adapter works with every iPad.

Know what more iCloud storage can—and cannot—do

Apple includes 5 GB of free iCloud storage with an iCloud account and offers iCloud+ for people who need more. Additional iCloud capacity may help with iCloud Photos or backups, but it does not increase the iPad’s built-in storage. A paid plan is optional; first check whether offloading apps or removing replaceable downloads addresses the problem.

How much free space should an iPad have?

Apple’s general performance guidance is to maintain at least 1 GB free to avoid slowdowns. This is a recommendation, not a hard technical minimum or a guarantee that reaching exactly 1 GB will resolve every performance problem. If you are below it, use the storage screen to identify content you can safely offload or remove.
