To free up space on a Samsung phone, first check what is using storage, then remove only items you recognize or move wanted files to storage your model supports. Start at Settings > Battery and device care (or Device care) > Storage; if those labels differ, search Settings for “Storage.”
Check what is using your Samsung phone’s storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care or Device care, then Storage.
- Review the available space and the categories shown. Menu labels and screens vary by model, software version, and country; Samsung Canada’s Device care guidance, updated 3 June 2026, notes that settings may differ. See Samsung’s Device care guidance.
- If you cannot find the menu, use Settings search for Storage.
Use the storage view to decide what to review first rather than deleting an entire category blindly. Samsung’s cleanup guidance covers recycle-bin contents, unused apps, duplicate files, and large files. The exact interface can vary; see Samsung’s storage cleanup instructions.
Delete files and apps deliberately
- Recycle bins: Review the contents of the relevant app’s bin before emptying it. Check the confirmation prompt; removing an item from a bin may be permanent.
- Unused apps: Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer need. If you are unsure whether an app or its data matters, check before removing it.
- Duplicate and large files: Inspect the individual items and keep what you want. Back up anything important before deleting it.
There is no universal amount of space you should expect to recover: it depends on what is stored on your particular phone.
Move files to a microSD card if your model supports one
Not every Galaxy phone has a microSD slot, so confirm support for your exact model before buying a card. On a compatible phone, use My Files to select files, tap Move or Copy, and choose the SD card as the destination. Samsung says this method works through My Files, not through apps such as Gallery. Follow Samsung’s SD card instructions.

Choose Move to relocate the selected files or Copy to keep them in both locations. Verify the files are present on the card before removing any remaining copy you no longer want.
Use USB storage or Smart Switch for an external backup
A USB flash drive or external SSD can connect to a Galaxy phone’s charging port, but compatibility depends on the phone and drive; an OTG adapter may be needed. Samsung describes using external storage with Smart Switch to back up selected content and restore it to a Galaxy device. See Samsung’s external-storage and Smart Switch instructions.

Smart Switch can transfer content from most Android and iOS phones to Galaxy phones and tablets over wireless, USB cable, or external storage. The items supported depend on the connected device. For details, see Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance.
External storage is useful when your phone lacks a microSD slot or you want a separate backup. Confirm that the phone recognizes the drive and that the backup can be accessed before deleting the only copy of any file.

Use cloud storage with sync in mind
Samsung lists Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox as compatible cloud-storage providers. A cloud copy can preserve files off the phone, but sync behavior differs by service and setup. Before deleting a local file, confirm that the copy is accessible in the cloud and check whether deleting it on the phone would also delete it from synced devices. Choose the storage option that fits the job

There is no single best option for every Galaxy model or workflow. Samsung’s support material does not establish a universal speed, capacity, or price comparison among these choices.

Do not confuse a special free-space requirement with a general target
Samsung says that enabling Maintenance mode requires 1.5GB of free space on devices with 64GB of internal storage and 500MB on devices with more storage. Those figures are requirements for Maintenance mode, not a general recommended free-space target. See Samsung’s Maintenance mode instructions.
