You can reduce some avoidable background activity without shutting down the apps you need, but first check whether RAM is actually the bottleneck. Use Task Manager to compare memory, CPU, and disk use; then review startup apps and supported apps’ background permissions. These changes can limit future launches or inactive activity, but they are not guaranteed to lower RAM use immediately.
Check whether RAM is the problem
In this context, “memory” means RAM, not disk storage. Microsoft describes RAM as a device’s short-term memory; it holds information apps need while they run. Clearing disk space may help when storage is nearly full, but it is not the same as reducing RAM use. Microsoft explains the difference between RAM and other computer memory.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Review Memory alongside CPU and Disk. Look for processes using substantial resources and note whether memory use coincides with the slowdown.
- Do not end a process just to lower the memory percentage. Keep essential work, security, accessibility, and sync apps running; investigate a process before changing it.
Microsoft recommends reviewing resource use to help identify what may be slowing a PC. Task Manager and other built-in system tools are described in Microsoft’s Windows system-tools guidance and performance guidance.
Reduce unnecessary background activity without closing essential apps
Stop nonessential apps from launching at startup
Go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps. Turn off only programs that do not need to start automatically. This can prevent those programs from launching on later starts and may help startup speed and overall performance; it is not a promise of an immediate drop in RAM while your current session is running.

Leave automatic startup enabled for anything you rely on, such as security software, accessibility tools, or work and sync apps that must be ready. You can reverse the change in the same list. See Microsoft’s instructions for configuring startup applications.
Limit background permissions for supported apps
For apps that offer the control, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, then find Background app permissions. Choose a less permissive setting if you do not need that app to work while inactive. Windows labels and availability can vary by release and device.

The tradeoff is that the app may not sync, update, or send notifications while it is inactive. Desktop programs may not appear in this list; manage their background behavior in the program’s own settings. Microsoft covers these controls and their implications in its background apps and privacy guidance.
Use visual-effects settings only for responsiveness
Microsoft lists reducing visual effects as one option for improving performance. It may make the interface feel more responsive on some PCs, but it is not a reliable way to reclaim a substantial amount of RAM. Treat it as a visual preference and responsiveness adjustment, not a memory-cleaning fix.

Do not change power mode to “clean” RAM
Windows’ Best performance power mode may help CPU performance, but Microsoft notes that it uses more power and can increase heat and laptop battery drain. It does not clear RAM, so it is not the right setting for reducing memory use.
What each option changes

When to restart, update, or consider more RAM
Restart only when troubleshooting calls for it
A restart can be part of troubleshooting or may be required by an update, but it closes the current session and apps. It therefore does not meet the goal of keeping essential apps open. Save work first and restart when the remaining problem or an update warrants it—not merely to lower a RAM reading.

Investigate persistent high memory use
If memory pressure continues, check which process is responsible and whether Windows or that app has an available update. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” The performance guidance does not promise a fixed amount of memory recovery from software changes.
Do not try to force a result with a RAM-cleaner app, registry tweak, or arbitrary page-file size. Microsoft says Windows’ default virtual-memory setting should perform optimally in most cases; its discussion of changing that setting concerns narrower, application-specific situations. Avoid disabling the page file or applying a fixed size as a general RAM remedy. See Microsoft’s Access guidance on virtual memory.

Check hardware compatibility before upgrading
If the apps you need consistently exceed what the PC can handle, additional RAM may be worth investigating, but many devices cannot be upgraded. Identify the exact model and installed RAM, then check the manufacturer’s specifications before buying anything. Microsoft’s general guidance suggests at least 4 GB for browsing, documents, and streaming, recommends 8 GB for long-term use, and says 16 GB or more may suit photo/video editing or other high-performance work. These are broad recommendations, not a diagnosis or guarantee for every workload. Microsoft notes that some devices under 4 GB may have options and advises checking with the manufacturer or a retailer. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still works, but Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
