Start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is using space, then remove or offload only what you can safely replace. If photos are the main issue, consider Optimize iPhone Storage after checking your iCloud capacity and understanding how synced photo deletion works. Apple does not specify one free-space amount that every iOS update requires.
Check what is using iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available capacity, storage recommendations, and apps ordered by how much space they use. Review the category breakdown and the largest apps before removing anything; the space may be occupied by app downloads, media, photos, messages, or other content. Use this view to target the cause rather than deleting items at random. An app’s storage use may include documents, downloaded media, or other locally stored data, not just the app itself.
Choose an app cleanup option
Offloading and deleting an app are different. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data; deleting removes the app and its related data. An offloaded app must be downloaded again before you can use it.

Try offloading before deleting
If the option appears in iPhone Storage recommendations, enable Offload Unused Apps. You can also offload an individual app from its entry in the storage list. This is a useful first choice when you want to free app space without removing its documents and data. Apple includes offloading among its suggestions when an update cannot install because the device lacks space.
Delete only data you can replace
For a large app, inspect its stored documents, media, and downloads. Remove only items you no longer need or can restore. Deleting an app may remove related data, so confirm that anything important is backed up or synced before you choose that option.

Free photo space without losing originals
If photos and videos take up much of the local capacity, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage in iCloud Photos settings. With optimization enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the iPhone as needed. The setting depends on iCloud Photos and sufficient available iCloud storage; iCloud capacity is separate from the iPhone’s storage.
Apple says a new iCloud account starts with 5 GB of iCloud storage. That is cloud capacity, not local iPhone space and not an iOS update requirement. Check available iCloud capacity before relying on optimization; if it is insufficient, you may need to manage iCloud storage or choose a suitable storage plan.

Do not treat deleting a synced photo as a way to keep it safely in the cloud: deleting an item in iCloud Photos also deletes it from other devices using the same Apple Account. Make a separate copy of anything you want to retain before deleting it.
How much free space does an iOS update need?
Apple says, “You need enough storage space on your device to download an update,” but its update instructions do not give a universal gigabyte threshold. The amount needed can vary, so use the available-space figure and recommendations in iPhone Storage rather than relying on a fixed target.

Apple’s separate guidance to keep at least 1 GB free is about avoiding slowdowns, not a minimum requirement for installing iOS. Neither that figure nor the 5 GB of starting iCloud storage tells you how much local space a particular update needs. - Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the downloaded iOS update in the list, tap it, and choose the option to delete it.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the problem continues, Apple recommends updating with a Mac or using iTunes where supported. Storage is only one possible cause of an update failure; compatibility, network or server issues, and an incomplete download can also prevent an update from finishing.
