Before formatting the USB drive
- Copy any files you need from the USB drive.
- Close File Explorer windows and applications using the drive.
- Check the USB drive’s letter in File Explorer → This PC.
- For DiskPart, open Command Prompt with Run as administrator. DiskPart requires membership in the local Administrators group or equivalent permissions, according to Microsoft’s DiskPart documentation.
Do not guess the drive letter. Formatting D:, for example, is dangerous if D: is a hard-drive partition rather than the USB stick. Microsoft documents the format command for Windows 10 and 11, as well as Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 (Microsoft).
Choose the file system

Microsoft lists FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ReFS, and UDF as supported values for the /FS: option. For most USB flash drives, exFAT, NTFS, or FAT32 are the practical choices (Microsoft’s format reference).
Format a USB drive with the basic CMD command
- Plug in the USB flash drive and confirm its letter in File Explorer.
- Search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Enter the command below, replacing X: with the USB drive letter, then follow the prompts:
format X:
Windows may ask for confirmation and a volume label. The volume argument can be a drive letter followed by a colon, a volume name, or a mount point (Microsoft).

Specify the file system
To format the USB drive directly as a particular file system, use the matching command:
- format X: /FS:exFAT
- format X: /FS:NTFS
- format X: /FS:FAT32
- format X: /FS:FAT
For example, to format drive G: as exFAT, run format G: /FS:exFAT.
Use a quick format and assign a label
Use quick format only on a previously formatted drive that you know is in good condition. This command selects exFAT, sets the volume label to USB, and requests a quick format:
format X: /FS:exFAT /V:USB /Q
Microsoft says /Q deletes the file table and root directory of a previously formatted volume and does not scan sector by sector for bad areas. It is not proof that a drive with read/write errors or slow performance is healthy (Microsoft).

To prevent a volume-label prompt, use /V: without a label:
format X: /FS:exFAT /V: /Q
Force the volume to dismount
If Windows reports that the volume is in use, first close programs and File Explorer windows that may be using it. If it still cannot be dismounted, add /X:
format X: /FS:exFAT /Q /X
The /X switch forces a dismount when necessary. Any open handles to the volume become invalid, so unsaved work can be lost (Microsoft).
Recreate the USB partition with DiskPart
Use DiskPart when the USB drive has damaged, missing, or confusing partition information, or when ordinary format fails because there is no usable volume. The clean command removes partition or volume formatting from the selected disk; it does not create or format a replacement partition (Microsoft).

DiskPart acts on the disk with focus. Selecting the wrong disk before running clean can erase its partition information.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and enter diskpart.
- Enter list disk and identify the USB by its displayed capacity.
- Replace N with the USB disk number, then inspect the selected disk before proceeding:
select disk N
detail disk
list partition
DiskPart marks the object in focus with an asterisk after list commands. If the size, model, or partitions do not match the USB, stop. Microsoft’s DiskPart documentation explains that commands operate on the object with focus.
- Only after confirming the USB disk, enter these commands to remove its partition information, create a primary partition, format it as exFAT, assign the next available letter, and exit:
clean
create partition primary
format fs=exfat quick
assign
exit
For NTFS instead, use format fs=ntfs label=Backup quick at the format step. To request a particular unused letter, use assign letter=E. If E: is already assigned, that command fails; omitting the letter lets DiskPart choose the next available one (Microsoft).

When Disk Management is easier
If you do not need to repair the partition layout, Disk Management may be simpler. Microsoft’s documented path is to right-click Start → Disk Management, then right-click the USB partition, choose Format, and select FAT32 where appropriate. If Disk Management does not open from Start, search for diskmgmt.msc, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator (Microsoft; Microsoft).
Run DiskPart from a script
For repeatable administration, put one DiskPart command on each line in a text file, without empty lines. Lines beginning with rem are comments. Do not let a destructive script guess the disk number; verify the target before running it.
Run the script with diskpart /s scriptname.txt. To save the output to a log, use diskpart /s scriptname.txt > logfile.txt.
By default, DiskPart stops processing a script after an error; syntax errors still stop processing even when noerr is used. Microsoft recommends waiting at least 15 seconds between separate DiskPart script executions (Microsoft).

Common errors and fixes

Do not run format against a drive prepared with subst or a network disk; Microsoft says those paths are not supported by this command (Microsoft).
