The options differ for text, code, and channel announcements, so choose the method that fits the message.
Use the formatting toolbar
The toolbar is the easiest way to find formatting controls and apply them to selected text. In a chat or channel compose box, select Format—also labeled Show formatting options in some Microsoft instructions—to expand the editor. Select the text you want to change, then choose an option such as bold, italic, or underline. The expanded editor also includes options such as highlighting, font size, and lists. Microsoft’s message-formatting guide describes the available controls.
On mobile, tap Plus, then Format, to open the formatting editor.
Choose between the toolbar and Markdown-style typing

Teams previews supported Markdown-style formatting as you type. If the result is not what you intended, press Ctrl+Z to undo it. Teams’ syntax is useful, but it is not full compatibility with standard Markdown. See Microsoft’s Markdown formatting reference for supported forms.

For shortcut alternatives such as bold, italic, underline, and link insertion, Microsoft lists Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U, and Ctrl+K for desktop and web. Ctrl+Shift+X expands the compose box, and Ctrl+Enter sends from the expanded compose box. Keyboard behavior can vary by platform, so check Microsoft’s Teams keyboard-shortcut list for your environment.
Format code for chat
Use inline code for a short command, filename, or token. For code spanning several lines, use a code block; you can choose a language when syntax highlighting would help readers follow it.

Microsoft documents several ways to insert a code block on desktop: type /code, use the formatting toolbar, enter triple backticks, or use a keyboard shortcut. Code blocks can be created only on desktop, though blocks created there render on mobile. The older code-snippet feature is no longer available for new creation after May 30, 2025; Microsoft directs users to code blocks instead. See its code-formatting instructions.
Give a channel post an announcement headline
If a channel post needs a prominent announcement headline, create an announcement rather than trying to make an ordinary chat message behave like one. Microsoft’s creation steps depend on whether the channel uses the posts or threads layout. Announcements are not available in one-to-one or group chats. Make formatted messages easier to read
- Use link text that explains the destination instead of generic wording such as “Click here.”
- Break long messages into short sections or structured bulleted and numbered lists. Avoid inserting an unstructured paragraph in the middle of a list.
- Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning; pair it with words or another visual cue.
- Avoid all capitals and excessive italics or underlining, which can make text harder to read.
