For everyday file sharing between a Windows PC and a Mac, format the external SSD as ExFAT. Back up its files first: formatting erases the selected volume. On a Mac, use Disk Utility; on Windows, use Disk Management.

Choose the right format

Use Choose What to know
Share ordinary files between Windows and Mac ExFAT Apple identifies ExFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for disks over 32 GB. It is the practical choice for most external SSDs used on both platforms. Apple’s Windows-formatting guidance and available file-system formats.
Use the SSD only with Macs APFS Apple’s file system for macOS 10.13 or later, optimized for flash and SSD storage. Apple specifically recommends APFS for external storage used with Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor. Apple’s format guide and media-app storage guidance.
Windows compatibility on a disk 32 GB or less MS-DOS (FAT) Apple’s Disk Utility instructions give this size condition for FAT. For disks over 32 GB, Apple recommends ExFAT instead. Apple Support.
Write to an NTFS drive from a Mac Do not rely on Disk Utility macOS may read NTFS, but Disk Utility does not support formatting NTFS and a Mac may not write to an NTFS volume. Apple’s format guide.

These recommendations concern compatibility and intended use; the cited guidance does not establish comparative speed benchmarks for the formats.

Before formatting

  • Copy anything you need to another location. Apple warns that formatting erases the files on the selected disk or volume, and Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data on the selected partition. Apple Support; Microsoft Support.
  • Confirm the correct drive is selected. Formatting the wrong disk or volume can erase its contents.
  • Check whether the drive is reserved for backups. A drive used for Time Machine may be set aside for that purpose rather than general file storage. See Apple’s external-drive troubleshooting guidance.

Format the SSD on a Mac

  1. Back up the files you want to keep.
  2. Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices.
  3. In the sidebar, select the external physical disk—the device at the top of its hierarchy—then click Erase. Apple notes that the Scheme control may only appear when the physical device is selected. Apple’s initialization instructions.
  4. For a new or initialized drive, choose GUID Partition Map as the scheme. If you do not see the Scheme option, check that you selected the physical disk rather than only a volume.
  5. Choose ExFAT for ordinary Windows/Mac sharing on a drive over 32 GB. Choose MS-DOS (FAT) only for a disk 32 GB or less when following Apple’s Windows-compatibility guidance. For Mac-only use, choose APFS.
  6. Enter a name for the volume, click Erase, and then click Done. Apple’s guide notes that erasing removes files from the selected disk or volume. Format a disk for Windows computers in Disk Utility.

Format the SSD on Windows

  1. Back up files on the volume you plan to format.
  2. Open Disk Management. Microsoft documents this tool for Windows 10 and Windows 11; it can initialize disks and create or format volumes. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide.
  3. If the SSD is new, bring it online if needed and initialize it. Choose GPT for modern UEFI systems, large drives, or when you need more than four partitions; MBR is intended for older hardware or systems without UEFI support.
  4. To use unallocated space, right-click it and create a New Simple Volume. To reformat an existing volume, right-click that volume and choose Format.
  5. Follow the prompts and select ExFAT for Windows/Mac file sharing. Formatting erases data on the selected partition; Microsoft distinguishes this from the type of format: a quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. Microsoft Support.

Formatting is not secure erasure

Formatting prepares a volume for use; do not treat it as secure sanitization of sensitive data. Apple says secure erase options are unavailable in Disk Utility for SSDs. If you are beginning to use an SSD and want to protect data, Apple suggests considering FileVault encryption. Apple’s Disk Utility instructions.
