Samsung says its Portable SSDs use exFAT and that the format is compatible with both operating systems. If the T9 already mounts and works, you do not need to format it. Formatting erases data, so back up anything you want to keep before proceeding.
Before you format the T9
- Back up the drive. Formatting or erasing removes data from the selected volume.
- Connect the T9 directly and identify it carefully. Check that the selected disk is external and matches the T9’s capacity. Do not proceed if you are unsure which disk is selected.
- Use exFAT for shared Windows and Mac file access. Samsung’s Portable SSD guidance identifies exFAT as compatible with both macOS and Windows. Its T9 product listing confirms Windows and macOS compatibility. Samsung Portable SSD FAQ · Samsung T9 product page
Format the T9 in Windows
Use Windows’ built-in formatting tool for the external T9 volume. Samsung’s support guidance confirms that Windows’ native tool can format an external SSD. Samsung Portable SSD FAQ
- Connect the T9 and open File Explorer.
- In the drive list, locate the external T9. Check its drive letter and capacity so you do not select an internal drive or another external disk.
- Right-click the T9 volume and choose Format. Windows labels can vary by version.
- Set File system to exFAT. Leave other options at their defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Review the selected drive one last time, then start the format and confirm the warning only if the target is definitely the T9.
When formatting finishes, the T9 should appear as an empty exFAT volume. The exact controls and labels may differ across Windows versions.
Format the T9 in macOS
Use Disk Utility to erase the external T9 and create an exFAT volume. Disk Utility’s menu and control labels can vary by macOS version, so check the labels shown on your Mac before confirming an erase.

- Connect the T9 and open Disk Utility.
- If the external drive is not listed, use Disk Utility’s view options to show all devices. Identify the T9 by its external-device listing and capacity.
- Select the T9’s external device or the volume you intend to erase. Confirm that the selection is not your Mac’s internal storage.
- Choose the erase control, set the format to exFAT, and choose a name for the volume if prompted.
- Check the selected device and its capacity again, then confirm the erase only if you are certain it is the T9.
After the operation completes, the drive should mount as an empty exFAT volume that can be used for file transfers with Windows and Mac.
If the T9 does not appear
Check the connection before attempting to format. Samsung recommends using the genuine USB Type-C cable supplied with its Portable SSD products; non-genuine cables can prevent recognition or reduce performance. Try the included cable and another suitable USB port, then check whether the drive appears in the operating system’s disk utility. Samsung T9 product page

Does Samsung Magician need to be installed?
No formatting prerequisite is stated for Samsung Magician. Samsung describes the software as providing drive-management functions such as health, security, and firmware management; its T9 product page does not say the app is required to format the drive. Samsung T9 product page

Samsung’s general Portable SSD FAQ supports exFAT for use with both macOS and Windows, while the T9 listing confirms compatibility with those operating systems. That makes exFAT the supported choice in this guidance for one drive shared between Windows and Mac. A specialized workflow may call for a different file system, but the available product guidance does not establish a complete comparison for every format or configuration.
