Formatting a volume can destroy its data, so back up anything you need and verify both the physical disk and target volume before confirming. For an accessible data drive, use File Explorer or Settings; use Disk Management to initialize a new disk or create a volume in unallocated space. Do not try to format the active Windows partition from the running installation.

Formatting is not routine drive-health maintenance, and a quick format is not secure erasure. If you have already formatted a volume by mistake, avoid writing new data to it where practical and investigate backups or recovery options; recovery is not guaranteed.

Choose the right formatting method

Method Best for What it changes
File Explorer An accessible data volume with a drive letter Formats the selected volume
Settings: Disks & volumes Viewing disk and volume details and managing a volume in Settings Can format, create, or resize volumes
Disk Management Formatting, initializing, partitioning, or assigning a letter to a disk Formats a volume or creates a new one in unallocated space
DiskPart Experienced users who specifically need command-line disk management Commands depend on the selected disk or volume; mistakes can affect the wrong device

Microsoft Support warns that “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” For most data-drive tasks, use one of the graphical methods. The active Windows partition cannot be formatted while Windows is using it.

Method 1: Format a drive in File Explorer

Use this route when the target volume appears in File Explorer with a drive letter. Check the letter, label, and capacity to identify it before formatting.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC in the navigation pane.
  3. Under Devices and drives, right-click the intended drive and select Format….
  4. Choose the available file-system and format options. Use the default allocation unit size unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  5. Review the target drive again, then select Start and confirm only if you have backed up anything you need.

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance gives NTFS as an example for computers with HDDs or SSDs and external hard drives, and FAT or exFAT for SD cards and flash or USB drives. Match the file system to the devices and operating systems that need to read the drive; these examples are not a complete compatibility guide. You can check a drive’s current file system by right-clicking it and choosing Properties.

A quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. Do not treat it as secure erasure.

Method 2: Format a volume in Settings

Windows 11 Settings provides disk and volume information and management actions. Microsoft notes that the labels can vary as Windows changes, so check the current interface on your device.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Storage → Advanced storage settings → Disks & volumes.
  3. Find the intended volume using its disk details, capacity, and usage, then select it.
  4. Choose the available format action and follow the prompts. Verify the target and back up wanted files before confirming.

Microsoft says Storage settings can show connected disk and volume details, including device type, capacity, and current usage, and support creating, formatting, and resizing volumes.

Method 3: Format or prepare a drive with Disk Management

Disk Management is useful when a disk needs to be initialized, partitioned, or assigned a drive letter, as well as when formatting an existing volume.

Open Disk Management

  1. Right-click Start and select Disk Management, search for Create and format hard disk partitions, or run diskmgmt.msc.
  2. In the lower pane, identify the intended disk by its number and capacity, and identify the target volume by its letter and label.

Format an existing volume

  1. Right-click the intended volume and select Format.
  2. Choose the available settings and confirm only after checking that the selected volume is correct and that wanted files are backed up.

Formatting destroys data on the selected volume. It does not automatically format every partition on the physical disk. A disk or partition currently in use, including the Windows partition, cannot be formatted.

Initialize, partition, and format a new disk

A new disk may appear as offline, not initialized, or unallocated. If it is genuinely new and has no data you need, Disk Management can bring it online, initialize it, and create a volume. Initializing a disk that contains data can replace its partition information.

  1. If the disk is marked Offline, right-click it and select Online.
  2. Right-click the disk label area and select Initialize Disk. Verify the disk identity before proceeding.
  3. Choose GPT for modern UEFI systems and large drives or when you need more than four partitions. Use MBR only for older hardware or operating systems without UEFI support.
  4. Right-click the disk’s Unallocated region and select New Simple Volume, then follow the wizard to create and format the volume and assign a drive letter.

Microsoft documents Disk Management as a built-in Windows tool for initializing disks, creating and formatting volumes, and changing drive letters.

Method 4: DiskPart for advanced users

DiskPart is an advanced command-line option, not the recommended route for most readers. The commands can operate on the selected disk or volume, and choosing the wrong device can cause data loss. The Microsoft sources reviewed for this article do not provide a general-purpose DiskPart formatting walkthrough, so this article does not give a destructive command sequence.

  1. Before using DiskPart, consult current Microsoft documentation for the exact task and command syntax.
  2. Inspect disk and volume listings and verify the device by its identity and capacity before any destructive action.
  3. If you are unsure which disk or volume is selected, stop and use Settings or Disk Management instead.

Quick format and data recovery

Microsoft says a quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase a volume. A normal format takes longer and, according to Microsoft Support, fully erases existing data on the volume. Neither description makes ordinary formatting a verified secure-erasure procedure.

If you formatted the wrong volume, stop writing new data to it where practical and check backups or recovery options. Microsoft Windows File Recovery documents post-format recovery scenarios, but successful recovery is not guaranteed.

HDD and SSD formatting

Formatting creates a file system on a volume; it is not routine maintenance to improve a drive’s health or speed. Microsoft says Windows defragments HDDs and sends trim operations to SSDs. Do not repeatedly format an SSD as a maintenance measure.

FAQ

How do I format a hard drive in Windows 11?

For an accessible data volume with a drive letter, use File Explorer or Settings. Use Disk Management if the disk needs initialization or a new volume. Back up wanted data and verify the target before confirming.

How do I format an SSD in Windows 11?

Use the same graphical options as for an HDD: File Explorer or Settings for an accessible volume, or Disk Management if you need to prepare a new disk. Formatting is not routine SSD maintenance.

Can I format the Windows partition while Windows is running?

No. Microsoft states that a disk or partition currently in use, including the Windows partition, cannot be formatted. Formatting the system drive requires booting from suitable installation or recovery media and selecting the correct target; follow the relevant Windows setup or recovery guidance rather than treating it as a data-volume format.

Does quick format securely erase a drive?

No. Microsoft says quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. Do not rely on it as secure erasure.

Formatting can make files inaccessible through normal browsing, but recovery may be possible in some cases and is not guaranteed. If you formatted the wrong volume, avoid writing new data to it where practical and investigate backups or recovery options.

Should I format an SSD to improve its health?

No. Formatting is not routine drive-health maintenance. Microsoft describes Windows as defragmenting HDDs and sending trim operations to SSDs.

The Bottom Line

Use File Explorer or Settings for an accessible data volume, and Disk Management when you need to initialize a disk, create a volume, or assign a letter. Reserve DiskPart for experienced users who can verify the selected device and current command syntax. Back up important data and confirm the target before formatting; do not format the active Windows partition from the running installation.
