First decide whether your document needs printable pages or a continuous Pageless canvas: page numbers, headers, footers and columns require Pages format.
1. Choose Pages or Pageless before arranging the layout
On a computer, open File > Page setup and choose the format that fits how the document will be used. Google Docs offers two layouts:
| Format | Best for | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | Documents intended for printing or a conventional page-by-page layout. | Page breaks and page setup, including orientation, paper size, margins and page color. Page-based elements such as columns, page numbers, headers and footers are available. |
| Pageless | Documents read by scrolling on screen, especially when wide tables are useful. | A continuous canvas; images adjust to the screen width and tables can be wide. Columns, page numbers, headers and footers are unavailable. |
These distinctions are described in Google’s Pages and Pageless help. If a document needs page numbering or headers, choose Pages before adding those elements.
2. Format text and paragraphs
Select the text or paragraph you want to change. Use the toolbar or open Format for font and emphasis, text or background color, alignment and spacing controls. To enter precise line or paragraph spacing, open the spacing controls and choose Custom spacing.

In a Pages document, paragraph options also include controls for keeping a heading with the following paragraph, keeping a paragraph’s lines together, and preventing a single line from being left alone at the top or bottom of a page. See Google’s paragraph and font formatting instructions.
3. Use paragraph styles to organize the document
Apply Normal text, Title and heading-level styles from the Styles control in the toolbar or through Format > Paragraph styles. Use heading levels in a consistent order so readers can distinguish main sections from subsections. Styles keep the structure coherent and make it easier to update the appearance of a heading level without formatting each heading independently.

When a document has enough sections to benefit from navigation, a table of contents can build on that heading structure. Google’s Google Docs guide covers using the app’s document features.
4. Set paper size, margins, orientation and page color
For page-level settings, open File > Page setup while using Pages format. Set the orientation, paper size, margins and page color to suit the document. If you want these settings to carry forward to new documents, use Set as default in the page setup dialog. Google provides the steps in its page settings instructions.

Use section orientation for one wide item
If most of the document should stay portrait but a table, chart or graphic needs more width, insert section breaks around that content and change orientation for the relevant section rather than the whole document. This keeps the rest of the pages in the original orientation. The section-based approach is also covered in Google’s page settings instructions.
5. Add headers, footers, page numbers or footnotes
These page elements require Pages format. Use Insert > Page elements to add a header, footer, page number or footnote. Headers and footers can be configured differently for the first page or by section; page numbers can be applied to pages or sections. To make a section behave differently, use section breaks and adjust its header or footer options. Follow Google’s instructions for headers, footers, page numbers and footnotes.

6. A practical formatting sequence
- Choose the layout: open File > Page setup and select Pages for print-style layout and page elements, or Pageless for continuous scrolling and wide tables.
- Establish hierarchy: apply Title and heading styles to section names, then use Normal text for body paragraphs.
- Refine paragraphs: select the relevant text and set font, emphasis, color, alignment and spacing from the toolbar or Format menu.
- Configure pages: in Pages format, set paper size, margins, orientation and page color. Use section breaks if only part of the document needs a different orientation.
- Add page elements: if needed, insert headers, footers, page numbers or footnotes through Insert > Page elements.
The detailed menu paths above are for Google Docs on a computer. Google’s mobile help for Pages and Pageless confirms that the app supports choosing between the layouts and that some page elements are not visible in Pageless, but the desktop paths should not be assumed to match on every mobile device.
