If a CD or DVD tray is stuck, first use File Explorer > This PC > right-click the optical drive > Eject. If that fails, use the drive’s manual release only when its documentation confirms it has one. If the drive is missing from Windows, troubleshoot device recognition instead of trying to free the tray.
Try Windows’ normal eject command first
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Right-click the CD/DVD drive and choose Eject.
- If the drive has a physical eject button, you can try that normal hardware control as well.
The File Explorer method is documented by ASUS support. It applies when Windows can see the optical drive; it may not work if the drive or an application is unresponsive.
Check whether an app is using the disc
Close applications that may be reading from or writing to the disc. If a write operation is in progress, let it finish before ejecting to avoid interrupting it. Microsoft documented a data-loss bug involving ejection during a write on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2; that report is specific to those legacy versions and is not evidence of the same bug on Windows 10 or 11. Use the manual release only if your drive has one
Some tray-loading optical drives have a small manual-eject hole; others do not. Sony notes that not all drives have one, and slot-loading drives may lack this release entirely. Check the manual for your exact computer or drive to locate the hole and confirm its procedure. Sony’s instructions describe inserting a pointed object such as a paper clip into a confirmed manual-eject hole: Sony support.

Release a tray carefully
- Shut down the computer and unplug its power if the device manual instructs you to do so. HP’s desktop procedure specifies disconnecting power before manual release.
- Use the manual to identify the release hole. Do not mistake an activity light or another opening for it.
- Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the confirmed hole until you feel resistance, then press gently. Do not force it.
- When the tray loosens, pull it out carefully and remove the disc.
HP’s procedure and cautions are available in its desktop support instructions. The instructions for your particular model take precedence; do not probe an unidentified opening.
If Windows does not show the optical drive
A missing drive icon in File Explorer or a yellow exclamation mark beside the drive in Device Manager points to a recognition or configuration problem, not simply a jammed tray. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting article recommends checking whether the drive is enabled in BIOS, installing the computer manufacturer’s chipset drivers, and reinstalling the CD/DVD device driver through Device Manager before restarting. It also includes registry repair steps and cautions that users unfamiliar with Registry Editor should seek help. Follow the steps for your system in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide.

Do not use USB safe removal to open a CD tray
Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media is a Windows control for removable devices, not the normal command for opening an optical-drive tray. Its icon may not appear when removable hardware is not connected or recognized. Use the optical drive’s Eject command in File Explorer for a supported drive instead. Microsoft explains the safe-removal control here.
