Add a source from Top Stories
For a recent news event, search for the topic and look for Top Stories. If the section appears, select the source control beside its heading (displayed as a cards/star icon), find the publisher, check it, and reload the results. Google describes this as a way to make selected sources appear more often in Top Stories when they publish fresh material related to your query.

What preferred sources change
Preferred sources personalize visibility rather than replace Search results with a list limited to your chosen publishers. Google says the preference tailors Top Stories, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Its publisher documentation says selected publishers may appear for relevant queries in Top Stories and receive a preferred-source badge in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Appearance depends on relevance and fresh related coverage; selection does not guarantee a placement on every search.
Google Search preferences and Google News following are separate
| Feature | Where you set it | Where the publisher appears | What it personalizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Preferred Sources | Search personalization → Source preferences, or the source control beside Top Stories | Relevant Top Stories; preferred-source badges in AI Mode and AI Overviews | Search and its related AI experiences |
| Google News Following | Search for a publication in Google News and choose Follow | The Following feed in Google News | Your Google News feed, not the Search Preferred Sources setting |
Google News features may require you to be signed in. Following a publication there should not be treated as setting it as a preferred source in Search. See Google News Help for its separate controls.

If you cannot find a source or your setting does not persist
-
The publisher is missing: Google Search Help says, “Sources that aren’t updated regularly may not be available.” A source may therefore be absent from the selector.
-
The setting does not carry over to another browser: Check that you were signed in when saving it.
-
You are looking for a Discover control: Discover has related source controls, but they are not the Search Preferred Sources flow. Google notes that some Discover features may not be available in all languages and countries or regions. See Google’s Discover help.
Does choosing a source mean Google considers it trustworthy?
No. “Trusted” is your judgment, not an accuracy guarantee attached to the setting. Google describes its news systems as organizing stories using factors including relevance, prominence, and publisher authoritativeness; selecting a preferred source is a way to personalize visibility, not a stated endorsement or verification. Assess reporting, sourcing, corrections, and transparency yourself. For Google’s explanation of news on Search, see What’s News on Search. For Google News story selection, see How Google News stories are selected.
