Fly the DJI Flip in an open area, keep it in sight, inspect it before takeoff, and treat its propeller guard, automated tracking, and Return-to-Home (RTH) as limited aids—not substitutes for attention or piloting. DJI says the Flip’s guard covers its propellers, but intelligent functions such as subject tracking do not support obstacle avoidance. This guide covers a cautious first-flight routine and the mistakes most likely to undermine it.
Know what the DJI Flip can—and cannot—protect you from
The propeller guard is not collision-proofing
The Flip has a foldable, full-coverage propeller guard, but that does not make it safe to fly close to people or through clutter. A guard does not remove the need to keep clear of branches, wires, buildings, roads, and other hazards.
Braking and obstacle sensing have limits
DJI says automatic braking is supported only in Normal and Cine modes and during RTH. Its support FAQ also warns that braking depends on specified conditions and may not stop the aircraft in time at higher following speeds. Intelligent functions, including subject tracking, do not support obstacle avoidance. Use tracking only where the flight path is open and predictable, and watch the aircraft rather than assuming it will avoid hazards for you. DJI Flip support
Choose a control method that fits the flight

Follow a safe first-flight routine
Before leaving
- Charge the battery to activate it. DJI says the battery ships in hibernation and must be charged before use.
- Install and prepare DJI Fly, and charge and ready your chosen controller.
- Check local aviation rules and airspace restrictions before choosing a site. In the United States, FAA guidance covers recreational rules, TRUST, registration, Remote ID, and airspace resources.
At the flight site
- Choose a spacious, open area away from people, trees, wires, roads, and water.
- Check weather and wind. The Flip is not waterproof: if rain begins, return and land promptly, then wait until the aircraft is completely dry before flying again.
- Inspect the aircraft and propellers before every flight. DJI says to check for cracks, wear, warping, corrosion, and loose screws; replace damaged propellers according to the manual.
- Read app warnings and address them before takeoff.
Before takeoff
- Confirm the home point has been set.
- Set an RTH altitude suitable for nearby obstacles. Consider the actual surroundings rather than choosing a height by habit.
- Check that you have enough space to take off, maneuver, and land without passing close to people or obstacles.
During practice
- Start with slow, simple movements in an open area and keep the aircraft in sight.
- Keep watching the environment and the aircraft even when using tracking or another automated function.
- Leave time and battery margin to land; do not treat DJI’s “up to 31 minutes” product-page figure as guaranteed usable flight time or a safety reserve. DJI Flip product page
- Stop automated tracking if the area becomes crowded or the flight path is uncertain.
- Pay attention to battery and warning prompts. Strong wind can prevent RTH, and obstacle sensing may not be available in unsuitable conditions.
After landing
Inspect the aircraft for collision damage before flying again. DJI says a collision affects the Flip’s fold-to-shutdown behavior, so a seemingly normal shutdown does not prove that the aircraft is undamaged. DJI Flip support
Avoid these common beginner mistakes
- Flying close to people because the propellers are guarded. The guard reduces exposure to the propellers; it does not make close flight safe.
- Tracking through clutter. DJI says intelligent functions such as subject tracking do not support obstacle avoidance.
- Setting RTH altitude without checking obstacles. Choose an altitude for the actual site, and do not assume RTH will overcome strong wind.
- Flying in rain or treating the wind-resistance rating as a beginner target. DJI lists wind resistance up to 38 kph (Level 5), but this is a manufacturer specification, not a recommended beginner wind threshold. Strong wind can also prevent return.
- Ignoring propeller damage. Check for cracks, wear, warping, corrosion, and loose screws before each flight.
- Assuming “under 249 g” settles every legal requirement. Rules depend on the aircraft’s actual configuration and how and where it is flown.
Check the rules where you fly
For U.S. recreational flights, the FAA directs pilots to learn the recreational rules, take The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), and check airspace. The FAA’s registration exception covers drones weighing 0.55 pounds or less when flown under its Exception for Limited Recreational Operations; registered or registration-required aircraft must comply with Remote ID. Confirm the actual aircraft configuration and applicable requirements rather than relying on DJI’s under-249 g product description. Start with the FAA’s getting-started guidance and FAA drone registration guidance. These FAA details apply to U.S. operations; check the aviation authority in other countries.

DJI’s support information, firmware, app behavior, controller compatibility, and specifications can change. Before flying, check the download center for the latest manual and safety guidance that match your controller, and consult current local rules and airspace restrictions.
