To fly an FPV drone safely in manual mode, learn the aircraft’s controls in direct view, build proficiency in an FPV simulator, then progress to short flights at a scouted open site with a visual observer where required. Manual mode is not standardized across all drones: read the current manual for your exact aircraft and firmware, especially for signal-loss and low-battery behavior. Goggles do not automatically permit beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight.

What manual mode changes

Manual or acro mode gives the pilot more responsibility for managing the aircraft’s attitude and movement than a stabilized mode does. The precise controls, response, stabilization, failsafe, and return-to-home behavior vary by aircraft and firmware. There is no universal stick sequence or switch position that is safe to apply to every FPV drone, so use the current manual for your model and learn its controls before flying.

Build skills before using goggles outdoors

Start with direct visual control

First learn to control the drone while watching it directly. EASA warns that FPV goggles show the onboard camera view while the aircraft is out of the pilot’s sight, which can limit situational awareness and cause disorientation. Its guidance recommends learning to fly while watching the drone directly before progressing to goggles: EASA’s FPV guidance.

Practise in an FPV simulator

Before attempting a real flight, practise in a radio-control simulator with FPV mode and become proficient. FPV UK recommends simulator practice for novice pilots in its 2025 handbook. A compatible FPV radio transmitter or controller can let you practise with familiar controls; check compatibility with the simulator rather than assuming a particular pairing will work. Use the simulator to build orientation and recovery skills, not as a substitute for learning your aircraft’s manual or following flight rules.

Move to real flight gradually

  1. Learn the aircraft’s controls: Read the current manual and identify how the exact model enters manual mode, responds to control inputs, and handles signal loss and low battery.
  2. Practise with the intended controller: Use an FPV-mode simulator and work on orientation and recovery until you can control the aircraft reliably in that environment.
  3. Choose and inspect a suitable site: Scout the area for people, roads, buildings, animals, trees, power lines, and nearby aircraft. Check local airspace and operating rules before takeoff.
  4. Keep the first flights conservative: Use short flights in an open area and have an observer maintain the required view of the aircraft. Do not rely on goggles alone for awareness of surrounding hazards.

Goggles, visual observers, and flight rules

FPV goggles do not by themselves authorize a flight beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). The rules depend on where and how you fly. Check the current requirements of the regulator for your location and operation before flying.

Where and operation Visual-line-of-sight guidance Other rule to check
United States, recreational The FAA says to keep the drone within visual line of sight or use a visual observer who is co-located and in direct communication with the pilot. Recreational pilots must give way to other aircraft, comply with applicable controlled-airspace authorization, take TRUST, and meet registration and Remote ID requirements where applicable. See the FAA recreational flyer guidance.
United States, Part 107 The FAA says that when using FPV or similar technology, a visual observer must always keep the drone within unaided sight. See the FAA Part 107 overview. The overview summarizes limits and operating conditions specific to Part 107; do not apply them automatically to recreational flights.
United Kingdom, Open Category The UK CAA says FPV equipment does not permit BVLOS flight in the Open Category. Consult the UK CAA FPV guidance for applicable conditions.
EU, applicable category and operation EASA cautions that FPV does not itself authorize BVLOS; exceptions and conditions depend on the applicable rules. Check EASA’s FPV guidance and the rules for your category and location.

For U.S. Part 107 operations, the FAA’s overview summarizes a 400-foot altitude limit, subject to a structure-related allowance; minimum weather visibility of three miles from the control station; a maximum speed of 100 mph (87 knots); and restrictions on flying over people. It also describes daylight and twilight provisions, including anti-collision lighting for twilight operations. These are Part 107 details, not a general set of recreational rules; check the FAA’s current requirements and any applicable exceptions before flying.

Check the site and surrounding airspace

Choose a practice area where you can maintain the view required for your operation and avoid putting people or property at risk. Scout for people, roads, buildings, animals, trees, power lines, and other aircraft, and consider how the site may change during the flight. FAA guidance says to give way to manned aircraft and avoid careless or reckless operation; EASA recommends scouting the location. This practical check does not replace local airspace rules or a complete assessment for your operation. See the FAA recreational guidance, FAA Aeronautical Information Manual, and EASA FPV guidance.

Know what happens on signal loss or low battery

Before takeoff, check the exact aircraft manual for what happens if the control link or video link fails and what the aircraft does at low battery. Verify signal-loss settings on the ground and understand the conditions under which the aircraft may activate a failsafe. Do not assume another model will return, hover, or land safely just because a different drone does.

The DJI FPV User Manual provides a model-specific example: DJI states that its FPV aircraft’s Manual mode does not support Low Battery RTH. The manual also describes Failsafe RTH under stated conditions, including signal loss, and says the response can be changed in the goggles. Those details apply to the DJI FPV described in that manual, not to FPV drones generally.

Practical preflight checks

  • Confirm which flight mode is active and how your aircraft responds in that mode, using its manual.
  • Check the model’s current low-battery and signal-loss behavior; do not assume a return-to-home function is available in manual mode.
  • Confirm the site is appropriate, check local airspace and operating requirements, and identify nearby people, obstacles, and aircraft.
  • Arrange a visual observer when your rules or operation require one, and agree how you will communicate during flight.
  • Keep flights short and conservative while building experience; simulator proficiency does not replace safe site selection or legal compliance.
