First identify what “rejecting” means: FFmpeg may fail to connect, YouTube may receive the feed but report poor stream health, or the connection may work while the output settings are incompatible. Check the exact FFmpeg error and YouTube Live Control Room message before changing settings; without those details, there is no reliable single root cause.
1. Identify where the stream fails
Use the symptom to choose the right troubleshooting path. A failed connection points first to the URL, key, protocol, or outbound route. A feed that reaches YouTube but is marked unhealthy points toward encoder output, bandwidth, or instability.
- FFmpeg does not establish or start the output: note the complete error. Check the destination URL, current stream key, selected protocol, and whether the cloud host can reach the destination.
- YouTube receives the feed but flags it: inspect the stream-health message and compare the actual codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval with the settings for that stream.
- The stream connects but has no usable audio or video: check FFmpeg’s output and input media, then review the Live Control Room preview and health indicators.
Before troubleshooting, preserve the full command with the stream key removed, the complete relevant FFmpeg log excerpt, the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the exact YouTube warning, and the cloud provider and region. A stream key is a secret: redact it anywhere logs or commands are shared.
2. Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the intended stream and copy its current ingest URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Make sure the stream key is configured for the protocol you intend to use. A key or URL from another stream, or a stale key, can prevent the encoder from starting correctly.

- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room and select its stream settings.
- Copy the current Stream URL and stream key. Do not paste the key into public logs, screenshots, or support posts.
- Update the FFmpeg output with those current values and the protocol selected for that stream.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the FFmpeg configuration to use the replacement.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guide advises copying the key from the Stream tab into the encoder and resetting it if needed.
3. Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s encoder settings
Check the actual output—not just the input file or the command you intended to run—against YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected key and protocol. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Bitrate is not one universal number. YouTube provides separate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the row matching your output in its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table. Do not copy a bitrate from a different codec or resolution and assume it applies.
- Verify the selected video and audio codecs are supported for the chosen protocol and stream configuration.
- Confirm the output resolution and frame rate are the values you mean to send and that the chosen bitrate fits that exact combination.
- Use constant bitrate encoding where applicable, and check that the keyframe interval is two seconds or less than or equal to YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Prefer RTMPS when using RTMP-compatible output: YouTube recommends the secure extension to RTMP.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation includes this generic example: ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. It illustrates sending a file in real time to a generic RTMP server; it is not a verified YouTube command. Replace the destination with the current YouTube ingest URL and key, and configure output encoding to match the selected stream. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for protocol options supported by the installed build.

4. Inspect FFmpeg, the input, and cloud CPU load
A valid-looking command does not prove the encoder is producing valid, real-time output. Read FFmpeg’s full startup and runtime logs for input errors, codec initialization failures, output errors, and warnings about speed or dropped frames. Confirm that the input file or source contains the expected video and audio streams.
- Record
ffmpeg -versionoutput, including build configuration, so you can confirm which protocols and codecs the installed build supports. - Run the command while watching FFmpeg’s progress output and the cloud VM’s CPU metrics. If encoding cannot keep pace with real time under load, investigate resource use and encoder settings rather than assuming YouTube is rejecting a valid feed.
- Check that audio is present and that the encoder’s output looks and sounds as intended; compare it with the YouTube preview and stream-health diagnostics.
- Where available, inspect a local archive or output sample to distinguish source-media problems from delivery problems.
YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder appearance and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive media where available.

5. Check the cloud server’s outbound connection
The relevant capacity is the server’s upload bandwidth to YouTube, not its download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total outgoing bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance also notes that download speed can be higher than upload speed and that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- Measure or review the VM’s outbound bandwidth while the stream is running, and compare it with the total configured audio and video bitrate.
- Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom; avoid treating a peak speed-test result as guaranteed sustained capacity.
- Review provider network policies and your VM’s routing and egress controls for the selected destination and protocol. Use the provider’s current documentation for any firewall or port requirements; those requirements vary, and there is no universal rule to assume.
- Where the provider exposes them, inspect connection errors, packet loss, and network utilization during the failure window.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its streaming tips warn: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

6. Test with the same workflow before relying on it
Use a private or unlisted test stream and review the Live Control Room preview and health indicators before a public broadcast. Test representative audio and motion, and monitor the stream while it runs. This helps separate a command that starts from one that actually delivers the intended picture and sound reliably.
7. Decide whether HLS is actually needed
HLS is not a general repair for a wrong RTMP key, incorrect bitrate, overloaded encoder, or blocked route. YouTube ties HLS use to HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP, and says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream.
For HLS, choose an HLS protocol stream key in Live Control Room and copy that stream’s HTTPS URL. YouTube’s HLS setup guide specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build and output workflow can meet those requirements before switching protocols.
8. Treat reconnect options as resilience, not a repair
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for some protocols and network errors. They may help recover from transient failures covered by the relevant option, but they cannot correct a wrong key, unsupported output, CPU overload, or a persistently blocked network route. Check the installed version’s protocol documentation for option support and scope; do not assume retry flags guarantee a healthy stream.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Check first | Action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails to connect or start output | Current URL and key, protocol match, FFmpeg error, cloud egress path | Copy the URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream; reset and replace the key if needed; confirm the cloud host can reach the configured destination. |
| YouTube receives a feed but marks it unhealthy | Stream-health warning and actual codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval | Match output to the applicable row in YouTube’s encoder settings table and inspect FFmpeg logs for output or timing problems. |
| Feed is unstable or breaks during transmission | Available upload bandwidth, 20% headroom, provider network metrics and egress policy | Reduce output demand if necessary, investigate packet loss or route issues where observable, and check provider network documentation. |
| Picture or sound is missing or wrong | Input streams, FFmpeg logs and output, Live Control Room preview | Verify source media and encoder output; use a representative private or unlisted test to check audio and motion. |
| Considering HLS as a workaround | Whether HDR or a codec requirement calls for HLS, and whether the key, URL, and output meet HLS requirements | Use HLS only with its matching stream key, HTTPS URL, segment and playlist configuration; expect higher latency. |
