YouTube problems in Brave can come from a site-specific Shields setting, stored YouTube data, an outdated filter list, or another browser issue. Test these causes in order, starting with Shields for YouTube, before resetting Brave or changing settings for every site.

After each test, reload YouTube and check whether the problem is fixed. If it is, keep any setting change limited to YouTube where possible.

1. Check whether Brave Shields is blocking YouTube

Brave Shields can block scripts, cookies, trackers, ads, and fingerprinting techniques that a site may need. Test Shields for YouTube before changing global browser settings.

  1. Open YouTube in Brave.
  2. Click the Lion icon on the right side of the address bar.
  3. Click the Shields state toggle to change it from Up to Down.
  4. Reload the YouTube page.

Shields Down disables Brave’s protections for the site currently displayed; it does not disable Shields globally. Brave remembers site-specific changes, so a test can continue affecting YouTube later.

For a narrower test, leave Shields enabled and click Advanced controls in the Shields panel. You can adjust individual protections for the current site, including ads and trackers, scripts, cookies, and fingerprinting.

2. Allow JavaScript and check YouTube’s cookie setting

Brave allows JavaScript by default, but blocking scripts can break site functionality. If YouTube loads blank, its controls do not respond, or videos will not start, check whether scripts are blocked for the site.

Open YouTube’s Shields panel, select Advanced controls, and check the script setting. If scripts are blocked, allow them for YouTube and reload the page.

Also inspect the cookie control. Brave provides three choices in the site-specific Shields panel:

Setting What it does What to try
Block third-party cookies Blocks third-party cookies while allowing first-party cookies. Brave describes this as its default behavior. Usually leave it enabled unless YouTube reports a sign-in or playback problem.
Block all cookies Blocks first-party and third-party cookies. Change this setting for YouTube testing. Blocking all cookies can prevent login and other site functions.
Allow all cookies Allows cookies for the site. Use temporarily to determine whether cookie blocking is responsible.

If changing the cookie setting fixes YouTube, try returning to Block third-party cookies and clearing only YouTube’s old stored data. That avoids leaving all cookies enabled permanently.

3. Test fingerprinting protection

Brave notes that fingerprinting protection can rarely cause a website to work incorrectly. Try this site-specific setting if YouTube loads but the player, controls, or sign-in features do not work.

4. Update Brave’s ad-block filter lists

Brave’s built-in filter lists can affect ads and page resources. Updating them is worth trying if YouTube’s player has recently changed or the problem began after a long time using Brave.

5. Open YouTube in a Private Window

On desktop, open Menu → New Private Window, then visit YouTube. This test can help isolate problems associated with the normal profile’s stored data.

  • YouTube works in the Private Window: follow Brave’s recommendation to clear the normal profile’s cache and cookies. You can start by deleting only YouTube’s stored data in the next section.
  • YouTube fails in the Private Window too: test site-specific Shields settings and filter lists. The problem may also involve Brave, your network, or a YouTube outage.

6. Delete only YouTube’s stored data

Clearing all browser data is usually unnecessary. Remove YouTube’s site data first so other logins and website settings remain intact.

From the YouTube tab

  1. Click the tune icon to the left of the address bar.
  2. Select Site Settings.
  3. Click Delete Data.
  4. Reload YouTube and sign in again if necessary.

Remove individual site-data entries

  1. Click the lock icon to the left of the address bar.
  2. Select Cookies and site data.
  3. Choose Manage on-device site data.
  4. Select the stored entries and click the trash icon.
  5. Click Done, then reload YouTube.

Use Brave Settings

Open Menu → Settings → Additional settings → Privacy and Security → Site and shields settings → Cookies and site data → View permissions and data stored across sites, or enter brave://settings/content/all in the address bar. Search for YouTube, then click Remove all shown or use the individual trash-can icons.

Deleting site data can sign you out and remove YouTube-specific preferences, but it does not delete your bookmarks or affect other websites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Clear only cookies from the browser data screen

If the site-specific options do not work, use Brave’s clearing screen while limiting what is removed:

  1. Open brave://settings/clearBrowserData.
  2. Select the relevant time range.
  3. Keep Browsing history and Cached files unchecked if you only want to remove cookies and site data.
  4. Select the cookie/site-data option.
  5. Click Clear data.

On macOS, closing a window with the x does not trigger deletion configured to happen when the browser exits. Completely quit Brave instead: right-click its Dock icon and choose Quit.

8. Repair Widevine only for a DRM error

Widevine is Brave’s component for DRM-protected video. It is not a general YouTube repair and should not be the first thing you change for an ordinary blank page, buffering problem, or missing controls.

Use it when YouTube or another streaming site specifically reports a Widevine or DRM problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open brave://settings/extensions.
  2. Find Widevine.
  3. Toggle it off, then toggle it back on.
  4. Relaunch Brave when prompted.
  5. Reload the streaming page.

Brave documents Widevine as disabled by default after installation, so a DRM-specific error may also mean the component has not been enabled.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Reset Brave settings as a last resort

Reset Brave only after testing YouTube-specific settings and site data. A reset does not delete bookmarks, browsing history, or saved passwords, but it does change more than YouTube:

  • Content settings
  • Cookies and site data
  • Extensions and themes
  • Homepage and startup tabs
  • Pinned tabs
  • New Tab page
  • Default search engine

On desktop, open Menu → Reset settings. On Linux and macOS, select Restore settings to their original defaults under Reset settings. On Windows, find the same option under Reset and cleanup.

This is particularly relevant when an app or extension has changed browser behavior. If the Settings menu is missing or will not open, Brave’s documented remedy is to uninstall and reinstall Brave.

Do not use outdated Flash instructions

Modern YouTube does not need Adobe Flash. Adobe ended Flash support on December 31, 2020. Instructions telling you to reinstall Flash, use Adobe Flash Player, or repair YouTube through chrome://components are legacy guidance and do not fix current YouTube playback in Brave.

FAQ

Why does YouTube work when Brave Shields is turned off?

A site-specific protection is probably interfering with YouTube, such as script, cookie, tracker, or fingerprinting protection. Open the Lion panel, use Advanced controls, and identify the smallest setting change that restores playback. Keep the exception limited to YouTube if possible.

Will clearing YouTube site data delete my Google account?

No. It removes local cookies and stored site data from Brave and may sign you out, but it does not delete your Google or YouTube account.

Should I enable Widevine to fix every YouTube problem?

No. Widevine is for DRM-protected content. Use it when Brave or the streaming site reports a Widevine or DRM error, not as a routine fix for blank pages or ordinary playback failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Flash required for YouTube in Brave?

No. Flash support ended on December 31, 2020, and current YouTube does not require it. Avoid legacy instructions involving Adobe Flash Player or chrome://components.

What should I do if YouTube works in a Private Window?

Follow Brave’s recommendation to clear the normal profile’s cache and cookies; start by removing YouTube’s stored data. The Private Window test points toward an issue associated with the normal profile’s stored data.

The Bottom Line

Test YouTube with Shields Down first, then check JavaScript, cookies, and fingerprinting protection. If that does not help, update Brave’s Content filtering lists, compare the site in a Private Window, and delete only YouTube’s stored data. Reserve Widevine repair for DRM-specific errors and use Brave’s full settings reset only after the site-specific fixes fail.
