Use PowerShell package commands only as an advanced, community-reported option; if app repair fails, Microsoft’s general system-file repair sequence is DISM followed by SFC.
The message alone does not prove that antivirus protection is off. Check your security-provider status separately, and involve your organization’s IT administrator before changing a managed device.
What the Windowsdefender link error means
Windows uses the windowsdefender: protocol to open areas of the Windows Security app. The error means Windows cannot route that link to a working registered app. It does not, by itself, establish that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is disabled or that the PC is unprotected; Windows Security also brings together firewall and other security features, and the active provider can depend on the device and installed security software. The cause can vary. A damaged app registration or package, corrupted Windows components, or configuration changes are possibilities, but the error does not identify which one applies to a particular PC. Community replies to reports of this exact message suggest package registration or reset as possible remedies; they are not a Microsoft diagnosis or guaranteed fix. Microsoft Q&A discussion

Try the least disruptive fixes first
1. Restart and check for Windows updates
- Save your work and restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates.
- Install pending updates, restart if prompted, then try opening Windows Security again.
2. Repair or reset Windows Security
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Windows Security, select its menu, and choose Advanced options. If the controls appear, select Repair first. Try opening Windows Security again. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, if offered.
Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset controls are not available for every app. The exact listing and controls can also vary by Windows version and device. Follow Microsoft’s app repair and reset guidance.

When to consider a Windows Security package command
If the app controls do not resolve the problem, some replies in the Microsoft Q&A community thread for this exact error suggest registering the Windows Security app package, sometimes called SecHealthUI, or running this command in elevated PowerShell:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackageThis is a community-reported step, not an official Microsoft procedure specifically for this error. The appropriate command can vary by Windows version or build, and PowerShell may return errors. Run it only if you understand the command and have administrator access; if it fails, stop and seek support for your specific device. Avoid broad scripts that re-register every app, and do not delete Defender registry keys or disable protection as troubleshooting shortcuts.

Repair Windows system files with DISM, then SFC
If app-level repair has not helped, Microsoft’s general guidance for missing or corrupted Windows system files is to run DISM before System File Checker. This can repair Windows components, but Microsoft does not say that it specifically fixes the windowsdefender link error.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannowand let verification reach 100%. - Restart the PC and check whether the link opens.
Use Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions if a command reports an error or you need the full procedure.

Compare the repair options before going further

Use Windows recovery only if earlier steps fail
If the problem began after an update or persists after app and system-file repair, review the available recovery choices before reinstalling Windows. Microsoft documents a Windows 11 option called Fix problems using Windows Update, which reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while keeping files, apps, and settings. Availability depends on the device and Windows version. Review Microsoft’s current-version reinstall guidance and Windows recovery options before proceeding.
Installation media is a more involved fallback, not a requirement for the usual app, package, DISM, or SFC steps. Back up important files and follow the instructions for your Windows version before using that route. A USB flash drive is relevant only if you reach the installation-media recovery path.

Check Windows version and get help when needed
Reports of this exact error involve both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but older community reports do not establish its current frequency or a single version-specific cause. Check your Windows edition, version, and build before following version-specific Settings paths. On a work- or school-managed device, ask your IT administrator before changing packages, security settings, or recovery options; organizational policy may control them.
