Xbox party chat on Windows 11 can fail for several unrelated reasons. You may be able to join a party but not speak, hear other members but use the wrong microphone, or be blocked before the party opens. The fastest fix is to identify which layer is failing: Xbox services, account privacy, Windows permissions, audio-device selection, or network connectivity.

Work through the checks below in order. After each major change, leave and rejoin the party to test it.

1. Check whether Xbox services are down

A service outage cannot be repaired by changing Windows audio settings or reinstalling the Xbox app. Before troubleshooting your PC, check the Xbox service-status page.

If Xbox services are experiencing an outage, wait for Microsoft to resolve it. If the service status is normal, continue with the local checks below.

2. Identify what “not working” means

The symptom usually points to the affected component:

Symptom Likely area to check
You cannot join the party Xbox services, account sign-in, privacy settings, NAT, Teredo, VPN, or firewall
You join but cannot hear anyone Windows output device, headset volume, party mute state, or party connection
Others cannot hear you Microphone permission, wrong input device, headset mute switch, or Xbox privacy settings
Only cross-platform chat fails Xbox communication privacy settings, account restrictions, or network connectivity
Chat worked until a VPN or security product was installed VPN adapter, network filter, firewall, or UDP traffic blocking

3. Check the Xbox party controls

Open the current Xbox app in Windows 11 and go to the Social area. Start or join a party, then select the party to display its controls. Microsoft may label the area Parties & chats, with a Start a party option.

  1. Open the party controls.
  2. Confirm that your microphone is not muted.
  3. Check whether the affected person is muted or blocked in the party member list.
  4. Leave the party, start a new party, and test again.

Hearing party members does not prove that your microphone is working. Windows can use one device for output and a different device for input.

4. Select the headset and microphone in Windows 11

Open Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, select the headset or headphones you are using. Under Input, select the headset microphone or the intended USB microphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then select the microphone and use Windows’ input test. If the input meter does not respond, check the headset’s physical mute switch, USB connection, Bluetooth connection, and battery. If the meter responds but party members still cannot hear you, continue to the privacy and Xbox-account checks.

For a Bluetooth headset, verify that Windows has not switched to a different output profile or another connected microphone. Disconnect unused audio devices temporarily while testing.

5. Allow microphone access

Windows microphone permission is separate from Xbox party privacy settings. A party can be joinable while voice transmission is blocked because desktop microphone access is disabled.

  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  5. Close and reopen the Xbox app, then test the party again.

If the Xbox app is not listed individually, the desktop-app permission is especially important. Also close applications such as Teams, Discord, Zoom, or a browser that may have taken exclusive control of the microphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check Xbox communication privacy

Xbox privacy rules can prevent you from joining or communicating with other players even when the headset passes Windows’ microphone test.

  1. Go to account.xbox.com/settings and sign in with the affected Xbox/Microsoft account.
  2. Open Privacy & online safety.
  3. Select Xbox privacy.
  4. Choose View details & customize.
  5. Open Communication & multiplayer.
  6. Set You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text to Everybody when cross-network or cross-platform chat is required.

Save the change if prompted, then restart the Xbox app and rejoin the party.

When the privacy option is locked

Child accounts and accounts managed through Microsoft Family Safety may not be allowed to change this setting. The adult or family organizer must change it from the organizer account. Changing settings repeatedly inside the Xbox app will not override a family restriction.

Account enforcement can also restrict Xbox communication features. Network or microphone troubleshooting cannot remove an enforcement action; check the account’s status through Xbox support.

7. Make sure every Xbox component uses the same account

Sign-in mismatches can cause party-join and entitlement problems. The Xbox app, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services may be authenticated with different Microsoft accounts.

  1. In the Xbox app, check the signed-in account.
  2. Open the Microsoft Store and check its account as well.
  3. Sign out where necessary.
  4. Sign back in using the same Xbox account you use for the party.
  5. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not create a new Windows profile as the first response to an account mismatch. Correct the Xbox and Microsoft Store sign-ins first.

8. Run Windows 11 Xbox networking diagnostics

Windows includes a page that reports the Xbox networking condition directly.

  1. Open Settings → Gaming → Xbox networking.
  2. Review NAT type.
  3. Review Server connectivity.
  4. Click Check again after making a change.

A failed Server connectivity result indicates a network, firewall, VPN, or Xbox-services problem—not an audio-device problem. An Open NAT is useful, but it does not guarantee working party chat. Privacy restrictions, microphone permissions, service outages, and incorrect device selection can still break voice communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Test the network without a VPN

VPNs and some third-party security products can interfere with Teredo, NAT detection, Xbox networking, and UDP traffic. Disconnect the VPN completely and test again. Closing its visible window may not be enough if its virtual adapter or network filter remains active.

Also test temporarily with third-party network-security software disabled, if your security product allows a controlled diagnostic test. Restore protection immediately afterward. Do not leave the firewall or antivirus disabled as a permanent solution.

10. Check NAT and router conditions

A strict or unavailable NAT can prevent party communication even when web browsing, downloads, and ordinary multiplayer features work. Common causes include:

  • Two routers connected in series
  • Carrier-grade NAT from the internet provider
  • Blocked UDP traffic
  • Router firewall or filtering rules
  • A restricted school, office, hotel, or public network

Restart the router and computer, then check Settings → Gaming → Xbox networking again. If NAT remains strict or server connectivity remains unavailable, the issue may need to be corrected in the router or by the internet provider. Do not assume that reinstalling the Xbox app will fix a restricted network path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Inspect Teredo status

Teredo is used by Xbox networking on Windows PCs. To inspect its state, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

  • Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless compatibility with XBOX and PC, plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity

  • QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
  • Ultra-Lightweight, Floating Headband and Memory Foam Cushions
  • Amplified 40mm Drivers for Powerful Spatial Audio
netsh interface teredo show state

The output includes the Teredo state, type, server name, client type, and related status. If Windows reports Teredo is unable to qualify, do not assume that Teredo alone is the cause. VPN software, firewall rules, disabled or filtered IPv6/Teredo traffic, router behavior, and restricted networks can all produce the message.

The commonly circulated reset command is:

netsh interface teredo set state type=default

This returns Teredo to its default state. It does not repair blocked UDP traffic, an incompatible router, a VPN conflict, or a firewall policy by itself. Run the diagnostic command again afterward and retest Xbox networking.

12. Repair or reset the Xbox app

If networking, privacy, and audio checks are normal, repair the Windows app installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox.
  3. Select the … menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Terminate, then reopen the app.
  6. If the problem remains, select Repair.
  7. Test the party again.
  8. Use Reset only if Repair fails.

Repair preserves the app’s local data. Reset removes local app data and requires you to sign in again. The available buttons can vary by Windows installation.

A full Windows restart is also worth performing. Closing and reopening the Xbox app is not equivalent to restarting Windows: a stale Gaming Services process, Xbox sign-in token, Teredo state, or virtual network adapter may survive app closure.

13. Check firewall rules without weakening security permanently

Windows Defender Firewall or third-party security software can allow the Xbox app itself while blocking Xbox networking components or related UDP traffic. If Xbox networking reports a connectivity failure, perform a temporary, controlled firewall test only if you understand how to restore the setting.

Re-enable the firewall immediately after testing. A proper fix is to allow the required Xbox networking components through the firewall or correct the security product’s network rule—not to leave protection disabled.

FAQ

Why can I join an Xbox party but nobody can hear me?

The most common causes are disabled Windows microphone access, the wrong input device, a muted headset or party microphone, and Xbox communication privacy restrictions. Check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, then select the correct device under Settings → System → Sound.

Does Open NAT guarantee that Xbox party chat will work?

No. Open NAT only describes one part of Xbox networking. Party chat can still fail because of microphone permissions, Xbox privacy settings, an account restriction, a service outage, a VPN or firewall filter, or an incorrect audio-device selection.

What does “Teredo is unable to qualify” mean?

It means Windows could not establish the Teredo condition required by Xbox networking. The cause may be filtered traffic, VPN software, firewall rules, router behavior, IPv6 settings, or a restricted network. Running the Teredo reset command alone does not identify or fix every cause.

Can a child account change Xbox voice-chat settings?

Not always. Microsoft Family Safety or Xbox child-account controls may lock the communication setting. The family organizer or adult account must change the relevant setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Xbox Console Companion?

No. Xbox’s current PC party workflow uses the Xbox app and its Social or Parties & chats features. Xbox Console Companion instructions are outdated for a current Windows 11 troubleshooting guide.

The Bottom Line

Start with Xbox service status, then check the party mute state, Windows audio devices, microphone permissions, and Xbox privacy settings. If those are correct, use Settings → Gaming → Xbox networking to distinguish a local voice-device problem from a NAT, Teredo, VPN, firewall, router, or Xbox-services problem. Resetting Teredo or reinstalling the app should be later steps, not the automatic first fix.
