If an Xbox Game Pass game won’t launch, first check whether you’re playing on a Windows PC or an Xbox console. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11—not console menus. On a PC, start by confirming your Microsoft account and updating Windows and Microsoft Store; then repair or reset the affected app if needed.
First, identify where the game is failing
Windows PC and Xbox consoles use different troubleshooting menus. The steps in this guide are for games launched through the Xbox app or Microsoft Store on Windows. They do not apply to console hardware.
On a PC, note whether the problem affects one game or every Game Pass game, and write down any error message. That information helps distinguish a game-specific problem from an issue affecting the app or Windows more broadly.
Try these Windows steps in order
1. Check your Microsoft account and restart the app
- Confirm that you’re signed into Windows, the Xbox app, and Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account associated with your apps and Game Pass access.
- Close the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, then open it again and try launching the game.

2. Install available Windows and Store updates
- Check Windows Update and install available updates. Also make sure the app is compatible with the Windows version installed on your PC.
- Open Microsoft Store and check for app updates from its Library or Get updates area. The exact label and path can vary by Windows version.
- After updates finish, reopen the Xbox app or Store and test the game again.

3. Repair the affected app, then reset it if necessary
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, select its menu, then choose Advanced options.
- If available, select Repair first and test the app.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, return to Advanced options and select Reset, then try again.

4. Reinstall the app if the earlier steps fail
If the Xbox app or Microsoft Store still won’t work properly, reinstall the affected app from Microsoft Store’s Library. 5. If you’re on Windows 10, try its Store apps troubleshooter
Microsoft’s guidance also describes running the Windows Store apps troubleshooter on Windows 10. The available troubleshooting experience can vary by Windows version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, and recommends moving to Windows 11. If Xbox keeps sending you to Gaming Services
A redirect to the Microsoft Store Gaming Services page can be significant when it appears with error 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Microsoft documents those codes in a specific Windows 10 issue involving the installation or startup of Gaming Services. This is an old, error-specific case—not a general fix for every launch failure. Do not run PowerShell commands or remove service registry entries just because a game will not open. If one of these exact codes persists after the standard Windows and Store updates and app repair steps, consult current Microsoft or Xbox support for advice specific to your Windows version. The cited Microsoft article describes an advanced workaround for its documented Windows 10 issue; it should not be treated as a universal recipe.
