To fix an x402 payment failure, first identify whether the client, server, and facilitator are using x402 v1 or v2. Then inspect the actual challenge and compare its selected payment requirement with the signed payload and verification settings. The exact error code helps distinguish malformed data from an amount, recipient, network, scheme, or version mismatch. If the result is settlement_pending, reconcile the transaction before retrying.

Start by identifying the version and transport

x402 has separate v1 and v2 specifications, and their field names differ. V2 requirements use amount; the v1 specification documents legacy naming such as maxAmountRequired. Do not rename a field simply because it appears in the other version. Check the deployed client SDK, server middleware, and facilitator versions, then validate against the schema those components actually use. The x402 specifications document v1 and v2 separately.

Also establish how the payment challenge travels between client and server. In the v2 HTTP transport, the protocol uses PAYMENT-REQUIRED, PAYMENT-SIGNATURE, and PAYMENT-RESPONSE. Record the status and headers as received rather than relying only on an SDK’s abbreviated error message. The HTTP transport specification describes these headers.

Support can vary by implementation. For example, Cloudflare’s gateway documentation describes its use of x402 v2; that is a provider-specific statement, not a guarantee that every facilitator supports the same versions or fields. Cloudflare’s x402 documentation

Capture and validate the challenge

In the typical documented flow, the client requests a resource, the server returns HTTP 402 with a payment challenge, and the client selects an offered requirement and retries with a payment payload. The server then verifies the payment locally or through a facilitator. Integrations can differ, so trace the values at each actual handoff. The x402 project documentation

  1. Save the raw response. Keep the HTTP status and headers. For v2, decode the PAYMENT-REQUIRED value and preserve the original JSON keys and values. For v1, use that deployment’s legacy challenge shape and transport conventions.
  2. Check JSON and top-level fields. Confirm the challenge parses and that x402Version matches the deployed protocol version. For v2, the PaymentRequired structure includes x402Version, resource, and accepts.
  3. Validate the chosen requirement. V2 payment requirements include scheme, CAIP-2 network, amount, asset, payTo, and maxTimeoutSeconds, with optional extra metadata. Check each required field’s presence and type against the versioned schema.
  4. Keep amount units exact. In v2, amount is a string expressed in atomic token units—not a human-readable decimal amount. Check the token’s decimals and the value used to construct the signed payment.

Compare the offered terms with the signed payment

A well-formed challenge can still fail if the client signs different terms from the requirement it selected, or if the server and facilitator verify against inconsistent configuration. Compare the same fields across the server’s challenge, the client’s selected requirement, the signed payload, the server’s verification request, and the facilitator configuration:

Square Stand for iPad (2nd Generation, USB-C)
  • iPad to POS in Minutes: Slide in an iPad and download the included Square point of sale app to get started. No training or service visits needed.
  • Your entire business in one place: Power every part of what you do, all on one device. That’s payments, your website, daily reporting, and so much more.
  • No extra readers required: Super fast built-in payments mean far fewer cords, zero fears of disconnecting, and a cleaner counter from here on out.
  • Keep selling, even offline: Keep taking payments with offline payments even when your Wi-Fi or connectivity is down. Just reconnect to the internet within 24 hours to upload transactions. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Stay powered even without power: if you need to unplug or if you lose power, Square Stand can run off a full iPad battery. iPad-powered mode only on USB-C compatible version.
  • scheme and network
  • asset and amount
  • payTo and the recipient encoded in the authorization
  • maxTimeoutSeconds and any scheme-specific extra values

Preserve the exact values while comparing them; visually similar network identifiers or amounts in different units are not interchangeable. The protocol documentation describes client selection and verification, but the cross-component comparison is a practical debugging method derived from that flow.

Use the error code to find the failing layer

The x402 v2 specification defines standard error codes that resource servers or facilitators may return. Capture the exact code and use it to direct the investigation instead of treating every response as a generic payment failure. The v2 specification

Error or class What to check first
invalid_payload Payload parsing and shape, protocol version, required payload fields, and scheme-specific fields.
invalid_payment_requirements The challenge’s requirements object: JSON shape, required fields, types, and server-generated values.
Amount mismatch Atomic units, token decimals and configuration, and whether the signed amount equals the offered amount.
Recipient mismatch The requirement’s payTo value versus the recipient encoded in the authorization.
invalid_network The network identifier and whether the server and facilitator support that network.
invalid_scheme or unsupported_scheme Scheme spelling and whether the facilitator supports that scheme.
invalid_x402_version Version compatibility among client, server, and facilitator; check that v1 names have not been applied to v2 or vice versa.

Do not retry blindly when settlement is pending

settlement_pending is non-terminal in the v2 specification. The response carries a transaction hash and network so the caller can reconcile the transaction on-chain. Preserve both values and check the transaction’s status on the stated network before deciding whether to retry; an uncertain confirmation is not proof that payment failed. The v2 specification

Retest the same deployed path

After correcting a field or configuration, retry through the same client, server, facilitator, scheme, network, and transport path. Log the resulting verification and settlement status so you can tell whether the change fixed the original failure or exposed a different one. This retest is operational guidance, not a claim that a particular integration has been tested.
