If Windows 11 says wmic is not recognized, first check your Windows version. Microsoft’s current documentation says WMIC is no longer included in Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 and cannot be added back as a Feature on Demand. On those releases, use PowerShell’s CIM cmdlets for the task instead. On an older release, check whether wmic.exe is present before troubleshooting PATH.
Check your Windows 11 version first
Open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications for the version, or press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter. The version determines whether there is a WMIC executable to find.
- Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2: Microsoft says WMIC has been removed and is not available to add back as a Feature on Demand. Skip PATH troubleshooting and move to the PowerShell replacement below. Microsoft’s WMIC utility documentation
- An earlier Windows 11 release: WMIC may still be present. Check for its executable and then test whether the command works by full path.
WMIC is the command-line utility, not the WMI management infrastructure. Microsoft states, “This change affects only the WMIC utility. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) remains supported.” Microsoft Learn
If you are on Windows 11 24H2 or later, replace WMIC
Use PowerShell’s CIM cmdlets to query WMI data. For example, to display BIOS information, open PowerShell and run:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS
To return only the BIOS serial number, run:
(Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS -Property SerialNumber).SerialNumber
These examples show the general pattern, not a one-for-one translation of every WMIC alias or command. To migrate a script, identify the WMI class and properties the original command used, then query those with Get-CimInstance. Older instructions may tell you to enable WMIC through Optional Features or DISM. Microsoft’s Windows 11 25H2 release documentation, last updated October 3, 2025, described reinstalling it that way at the time. Its newer documentation, current as of August 2026, says WMIC is unavailable as a Feature on Demand on Windows 11 24H2 and later. Those earlier steps therefore do not apply to these releases. If you are on an older release, check for wmic.exe
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run
C:WindowsSystem32wbemwmic.exe. If you add arguments, put the executable path in quotation marks. - If the command works by full path but
wmicalone is not recognized, check whether%SystemRoot%System32wbemis included in the system PATH. - After changing an environment variable, close and reopen Command Prompt or PowerShell, then try
wmicagain.
If the executable is missing, a PATH change will not restore it. This check is only useful on an installation that still includes WMIC; it cannot restore WMIC on Windows 11 24H2 or later.

Why the error appears
The message—often phrased as “‘wmic’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file”—means the shell cannot find a command with that name. On an older release, that can happen if the executable is absent or its folder is not in PATH. On Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, the command is absent because Microsoft removed the utility.
