If Windows + PrtScn seems broken, first check Pictures > Screenshots in File Explorer. Windows is meant to save that full-screen capture there, but a missing file does not necessarily mean no capture occurred: PrtScn by itself can copy an image to the clipboard instead. The steps below distinguish a shortcut problem from a save-location or keyboard issue. They apply to the Windows 10 and Windows 11 behavior documented by Microsoft.
First identify what “not working” means
The right fix depends on the result you expected. A screenshot might be captured but not saved automatically, saved somewhere other than the folder you checked, or not captured because the keyboard combination is not reaching Windows as intended.
- No visible response: test another built-in capture method, then check the key mapping.
- The screen flashes, but there is no file: check the Screenshots folder and any OneDrive Pictures backup.
- You need an image immediately: use Windows + Shift + S or paste a Print Screen capture into an app.
- The key combination is awkward or unavailable: inspect the key’s Fn layer or use the documented alternative for keyboards without a PrtScn key.
Do not assume that every Print Screen key press creates a file. Microsoft distinguishes the clipboard behavior of Print Screen from Windows + PrtScn, which saves a full-screen image. See Microsoft’s Copy the window or screen contents and Windows keyboard shortcut reference.
Check the expected save location
- Press Windows + PrtScn once. On some keyboards, you may need to hold Fn as well.
- Open File Explorer and select Pictures > Screenshots.
- Sort by date modified or look for the newest image. Windows’ documented destination for this shortcut is the Screenshots subfolder under Pictures.
- If that folder is empty, but Pictures is backed up by OneDrive, open the corresponding Pictures folder in OneDrive and check its Screenshots subfolder.
The folder’s visible location can vary with your OneDrive account and folder-backup configuration. Microsoft says the former separate “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available: screenshot backup depends on including Pictures in OneDrive. If this is a work or school device, an organization may control OneDrive options. If you cannot change a relevant setting, ask your administrator rather than installing a utility or changing system settings at random.
Test whether Windows can capture the screen
Use Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, select a region of the screen.
- Inspect the resulting snip in the Snipping Tool window or paste it into an image-capable application.
Microsoft documents this shortcut as a way to open Snipping Tool for a still-image capture. The captured snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited, saved, or shared. See Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

If this works, Windows can capture a still image. That does not prove the cause of the Windows + PrtScn problem, but it narrows the issue: the shortcut, the expected save behavior, or the keyboard mapping may be involved. Use Windows + Shift + S as a practical workaround while you check those possibilities.
Test Print Screen through the clipboard
- Open Paint or another image-capable app.
- Press PrtScn (or the key’s Fn combination, if required).
- Press Ctrl + V in the app.
If an image appears, Print Screen captured content to the clipboard even though no file appeared automatically. Use the app’s save command to create an image file. If nothing appears, the key press may not be reaching Windows as Print Screen, or the capture path may be behaving differently from what you expected; continue with the keyboard checks below.

Check the keyboard and Fn layer
Look closely for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. On compact keyboards and laptops, Print Screen may share a key with another function and require Fn. Try the manufacturer’s documented Fn combination if the printed label or keyboard guide indicates one.
For hardware without a dedicated PrtScn button, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space as an alternative. This is hardware-dependent, so it may not work on every keyboard; check your device’s keyboard guide if it does not. If you can borrow an external keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key, testing it can help distinguish a device-key or Fn-layer issue from a Windows capture issue. This is an optional diagnostic, not a required purchase. If the external key behaves differently, consult the device maker’s instructions for the built-in keyboard.
Check whether Print Screen opens Snipping Tool
Windows includes a setting that changes what the Print Screen button does. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and inspect the option to use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut reference describes this setting.

If enabled, pressing Print Screen can open screen snipping rather than behaving as a direct full-screen-file shortcut. Decide which result you want, adjust the setting if needed, then test again. Do not treat this toggle as a universal fix for Windows + PrtScn: it concerns Print Screen behavior, and the two actions should not be confused.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The shortcut does nothing
- Try Windows + Shift + S. If its overlay opens, use that for a capture while testing the original shortcut.
- Check whether your key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn and whether it shares a function that requires Fn.
- For a device without a PrtScn button, try the Microsoft-listed Fn + Windows + Space combination if it matches your hardware.
- If available, compare with a dedicated Print Screen key on an external keyboard. A different result points toward checking the built-in keyboard’s mapping or device guidance; it does not by itself establish a specific fault.
A capture appears to happen, but no file is there
- Check Pictures > Screenshots first, then the backed-up Pictures folder if OneDrive folder backup is in use.
- Try PrtScn followed by Ctrl + V in Paint. If an image pastes, you have a clipboard capture, not necessarily a file saved by the shortcut.
- Use Windows + Shift + S and save the selected snip from Snipping Tool if you need a file right away.
Print Screen opens an overlay instead of saving a full screen
Inspect the Print Screen screen-snipping option at Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. This behavior can account for a changed response to Print Screen; it is separate from the question of where a Windows + PrtScn image is saved.
OneDrive settings are unavailable
Check whether Pictures is included in OneDrive backup and whether you are looking in the folder associated with the correct account. On a managed work or school device, ask the organization administrator if policy prevents changing the setting.

What to do if the built-in tests still fail
If Windows + Shift + S does not open, Print Screen cannot be pasted into an image app, the keyboard mapping appears correct, and the expected save folder has been checked, the supplied Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal next fix. Compare with a dedicated external key if one is available, review your device maker’s keyboard instructions, and use Windows’ built-in capture route that works for your immediate task. Avoid third-party driver-updater tools: the shortcut symptoms alone do not show that a driver update is needed.
