These steps address the setting itself; display-driver troubleshooting is a separate path unless you also have driver-related symptoms.
Set and save the per-app graphics preference
Microsoft documents this workflow for Windows 11. The available choices depend on the PC; the labels may differ on other Windows releases.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the target app under its custom options and open Options. For a desktop app, check that the entry points to the executable that actually runs the application or game, not just its launcher.
- Choose Let Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance, then select Save.
- Close Settings and restart the app or game before checking whether the change took effect.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance for per-app graphics preferences describes this selection-and-save sequence.
Choose the option that fits the app
When Windows offers multiple graphics choices, select based on the app’s needs and the PC’s battery or power priorities. The exact GPUs available to choose from depend on the device.

Reset the app’s custom graphics settings
If the preference appears stuck, return to the Graphics page, select the affected app’s Reset control, and then choose the desired option and save it again. The reset applies to that app’s custom settings.
Graphics preferences are app-specific, and an app’s custom setting can take precedence over a system-wide preference. Make sure you are changing the entry for the application you are troubleshooting. Microsoft explains the app-level options and reset behavior in its overview of the redesigned Graphics settings page, published January 19, 2023.

Investigate display-driver problems only when symptoms point there
If the issue began after a recent Windows Update display-driver change, or you are also seeing symptoms such as screen flickering, consider the driver as a separate troubleshooting lead. Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance discusses rolling back a display driver in relevant cases. That advice is conditional; it does not establish driver rollback as a general fix for a graphics preference that will not save.
Avoid registry edits as a first-line fix
The Microsoft guidance cited here does not prescribe deleting a GPU-preference registry key as a general repair for this issue. If a qualified technician has a specific reason to edit the registry, export the relevant key or subkey first and retain the backup so it can be imported to restore the saved copy. Microsoft’s registry backup and restore instructions cover that safety step.

If the preference still reverts, collect details for diagnosis
The Microsoft sources cited here do not identify one universal cause when resetting and saving fail. Record these details before seeking case-specific support:
- Your Windows version and build.
- Whether the app is a desktop app or a Store app, and the exact executable selected in Graphics settings.
- The PC’s GPU setup.
- Whether the selection reverts immediately or only after restarting, signing out, or installing an update.
- Recent Windows or display-driver changes.
If you are still using Windows 10, note that Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025; the click-by-click Save workflow above is documented specifically for Windows 11.
