Windows Copilot is a standalone app in Windows 11. If it is missing, will not open, shows a blank window, rejects your sign-in, or opens only a small quick view, first check that the app is installed and use a personal Microsoft Account; then try the app and Windows repair steps below.

Work through these fixes in order and stop when Copilot works again. Later steps affect more of Windows, so reserve them for persistent or system-wide problems.

1. Check whether Copilot is installed

The current Windows Copilot experience is an installed app, not a permanently built-in Windows sidebar.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Copilot.
  3. If it appears, launch it from Start or continue with the repair steps below.
  4. If it does not appear, open the Microsoft Store, search for Copilot, and install it.

On new Windows 11 PCs, Copilot may already be installed and pinned to the taskbar or listed in Start. If it is absent from Installed apps, install it from the Microsoft Store.

2. Check the account you are using

The Windows Copilot app requires a personal Microsoft Account. A work or school account is not a supported sign-in method for this app. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate product with different account requirements.

If Copilot refuses to sign in:

  1. Open Copilot from Start.
  2. Sign out if an account is already shown.
  3. Sign in with a personal Microsoft Account.
  4. Close and reopen Copilot.

3. Restart Copilot and Windows

A stuck Copilot process can make the app appear to do nothing or leave a blank window on screen.

  1. Close the Copilot window.
  2. Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
  3. Open Copilot again from Start.

4. Repair the Copilot app

Windows 11 can repair some apps without deleting their data. Try Repair before Reset.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Copilot.
  3. Select the … (More options) button beside Copilot.
  4. Select Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. When the process finishes, launch Copilot again.

Repair may be missing on some installations. Microsoft does not expose Advanced options, Repair, or Reset for every app.

6. Change the Copilot shortcut if it opens the wrong window

On supported keyboards, the Copilot key launches Copilot. You can also press Windows key + C. Depending on the configured shortcut behavior, either shortcut can open the full app or a smaller quick view.

  1. Open the Copilot app.
  2. Select Account > Settings.
  3. Find Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts.
  4. Change the shortcut behavior from quick view to the full application, if that is the option you want.

If the app opens normally from Start but not from a keyboard shortcut, the installation is probably working. Check the shortcut configuration or keyboard hardware.

7. Update Windows 11 and the Copilot app

Compatibility fixes for Windows apps may be delivered through Windows Update and the Microsoft Store.

Install Windows updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates.
  4. Restart when Windows asks you to.

Update Copilot from the Microsoft Store

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Select Get updates.
  4. Wait for Copilot and other Store apps to finish updating.

Windows Update can fail because of corrupted update files or cache data, incomplete downloads, low disk space, incompatible drivers, permission problems, or third-party security software. These causes are worth investigating if Copilot broke after an interrupted update.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
  3. Choose whether Windows may restart automatically 15 minutes after installation.

This option may be missing on a work- or school-managed PC. It is also unavailable on Windows 11 versions earlier than the 2022 annual update or on systems without the February 2024 optional update or a later update. Update-management controls and policies, including WSUS-related policy, feature-update or quality-update deferral, target-release-version policy, or “Remove access to use all Windows Update features,” can also make it unavailable.

If the option is missing on a managed computer, contact the administrator rather than changing update policies yourself.
