If a Windows 11 update downloads but fails to install with error 0x80070306, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. Then identify the exact failed KB update and your Windows build before trying a package-specific fix. The error appears in individual Windows 11 update reports, but the available evidence does not establish one cause or a guaranteed remedy for every device.

1. Record which update failed

Before changing update components or downloading an installer, note the details that determine which troubleshooting steps apply:

  • KB number: Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and find the failed update. Record its KB identifier, if shown.
  • Windows version and build: Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter.
  • Architecture: Check Settings > System > About for the device’s system type.
  • Failure stage: Note whether the update downloaded successfully and then failed during installation, along with the exact error code.

Microsoft’s Windows installation troubleshooting guidance recommends identifying the failed update and recording its error code. These details also help distinguish a general update problem from one tied to a particular package.

2. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft Support says: “If you are using a Windows 11 device, start by running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.”

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooting or follow the prompts to run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Apply any recommended fixes and restart if prompted.
  4. Return to Settings > Windows Update and try the update again.

This is the recommended starting point in Microsoft’s current Windows 11 update troubleshooting guidance. If the error persists, use the failed KB number to check whether the package applies to your device.

3. Check the failed KB update before installing it manually

Search the KB number on the Microsoft Windows 11 update history and open the update’s Knowledge Base details. Confirm that the update applies to your Windows version and build, and review any listed prerequisites or known issues. Also check Microsoft’s Windows release health information for your version.

Only consider a manual installation after confirming the correct package for the affected update and device. The error code alone does not identify which package to download. A report involving KB5079473, for example, does not establish that the same cause or fix applies to other KB updates or Windows 11 devices.

4. Repair Windows system files if the failure continues

Windows Update can be affected by corrupted system files. Microsoft’s technical guidance includes steps for detecting and repairing Windows image and file corruption. If you are comfortable using an elevated terminal, follow Microsoft’s current System File Checker instructions, which also cover DISM. Use the commands and sequence in Microsoft’s instructions rather than substituting commands from an unrelated guide.

These repair tools address Windows system-file problems; they do not establish that corruption is the cause of every 0x80070306 failure. Restart after completing the repair steps, then check Windows Update again.

5. Reset Windows Update components only if needed

If the troubleshooter, package checks, and applicable system-file repair steps have not helped, a reset of Windows Update components may be worth considering. Microsoft’s Windows Update component reset guidance covers update services and the SoftwareDistribution cache.

6. Consider a repair reinstall as an escalation

If the earlier steps fail, a Microsoft Q&A independent advisor suggested trying the repair reinstall option in Settings. The suggested path is Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. The option may not be available on every device; check the current Microsoft support instructions and the wording shown on your PC before proceeding. The Q&A response describes this as keeping files, apps, and settings, but it is community advice—not a guaranteed resolution for error 0x80070306.

What the error code does—and does not—tell you

Windows 11 users have reported 0x80070306 during update installation, including in a Microsoft Q&A thread about KB5079473. Those reports do not demonstrate a single root cause shared by all affected devices. Microsoft’s general guidance supports a staged approach: automated diagnosis first, checks for the specific update next, and system or update-component repairs only if needed. No source cited here establishes a success rate or a fix that works for every Windows 11 version.
