If Windows 11 taskbar icons stop responding after you change their alignment, first restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, then test the taskbar and Start menu. This is a practical first recovery step—not proof that changing alignment caused the problem. Microsoft documents how to change alignment but does not identify it as a cause of unresponsive clicks or describe a specific Windows 11 build with this defect.
First, identify what is not working
Before choosing a repair, note whether you have visible icons that do nothing when clicked, blank or missing icons, or a taskbar and Start menu that are both unresponsive. These symptoms are not interchangeable: Microsoft’s icon-cache instructions are for blank or missing icons, not a general failure to respond to clicks.
Also note whether the problem affects every taskbar icon or only one, and whether Start responds. That information helps distinguish a broad shell problem from an issue limited to a particular icon or app.
Restart Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer hosts the taskbar, so restarting it is a sensible first recovery attempt. A response in a Microsoft Q&A thread suggests this step for a nonresponsive taskbar; it is community troubleshooting advice, not a guaranteed fix or a diagnosis of an alignment-related bug.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Task Manager shows a simplified view, select More details.
- Under Processes, find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click Windows Explorer and select Restart. The taskbar may disappear briefly while Explorer restarts.
- Try the affected taskbar icons and Start again.
If Explorer is not listed, or restarting it does not restore clicks, avoid assuming that clearing the icon cache will help unless the icons are actually blank or missing.
Check the alignment setting after the taskbar responds
Once you can use Settings again, confirm the intended position at Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar alignment. Windows 11 offers Center and Left alignment. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance explains this preference but does not connect changing it to taskbar clicks becoming unresponsive.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings reference documents the backing preference at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvancedTaskbarAl: 0 means left-aligned and 1 means centered. This describes the setting; it is not a recommended registry repair. Use Settings for an ordinary alignment change rather than editing the registry.
If icons are blank or missing, repair the icon cache
Use this procedure only when the symptom is blank or missing icons. Microsoft’s corrupted-icons troubleshooting article describes clearing the icon cache to restore taskbar icon display. Save open work first: the steps end and restart Explorer.

- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Under Processes, right-click Windows Explorer and choose End task.
- In Task Manager, select File > Run new task.
- Enter
cmd, select the option to create the task with administrative privileges, and open it. - At the Command Prompt, run
CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal, then runDEL IconCache.db /a. - Return to Task Manager and select File > Run new task. Enter
explorer.exeand run it to start Explorer again.
The same Microsoft article describes further steps involving ShellExperienceHost registration and shortcut IconHandler registry values. Treat those as advanced, symptom-specific troubleshooting, not routine fixes for icons that look normal but ignore clicks. Back up the registry before modifying values, as the article instructs.

- Recent Windows updates and when the symptom began.
- Whether Start, all taskbar icons, or only particular icons are affected.
- Whether icons are visible, blank, or missing.
A Microsoft Q&A response also mentions sfc /scannow and, if needed, DISM image repair; other community suggestions include rolling back an update or using System Restore. These are community suggestions for a generally nonresponsive taskbar, not validated fixes for a failure specifically following an alignment change. Do not roll back an update or restore the system without checking the likely consequences and confirming that the broader symptom warrants it.
