If Windows says your Wi-Fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration, work through the connection from simplest to most disruptive: check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode, forget and reconnect to the network, restart the modem and router, then reset Windows network components and test the router connection. Save driver removal and Windows Network reset for last; they can affect network settings and related software.
1. Check Wi-Fi and reconnect to the network
- Open the taskbar network controls and confirm Wi-Fi is on and you are trying to connect to the intended network.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Airplane mode and turn Airplane mode off if it is enabled.
- Forget the network at Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, then reconnect and enter its password.
For additional Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance, see Microsoft Support’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.
2. Restart the modem and router
Restarting the network equipment briefly disconnects every device using that Wi-Fi. Follow the device maker’s instructions if they differ. For separate modem and router units, Microsoft recommends unplugging both, waiting about 30 seconds, powering the modem back on and letting it settle, then powering on the router and waiting for it to finish starting.
3. Check whether the problem is the PC or the network
Try connecting another phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network. If those devices also fail, the router, modem, or internet service may be involved. If they connect normally, focus on this Windows PC’s connection or adapter. If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band.

- 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 – This compact USB Wi-Fi adapter provides long-range and lag-free connections wherever you are. Upgrade your PCs or laptops to 802.11ac standards which are three times faster than wireless N speeds.

- 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐.𝟒 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 – Dual-bands provide flexible connectivity, giving your devices access to the latest routers for faster speeds and extended range. Wireless Security - WEP, WPA/WPA2, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
- 𝟓𝐝𝐁𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 – The high gain antenna of the Archer T2U Plus greatly enhances the reception and transmission of WiFi signal strengths.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
4. Reset Windows network components and renew the IP address
Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run these commands one at a time, in this order, and then check whether Wi-Fi works:
netsh winsock resetnetsh int ip resetipconfig /releaseipconfig /renewipconfig /flushdns
The commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP, release and renew the IP address, and clear the DNS resolver cache. They are not a guaranteed fix: they do not establish whether the router is assigning addresses correctly.

- Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
5. Test whether the PC can reach the router
- In Command Prompt, run
ipconfigand find the Default Gateway listed under the Wi-Fi adapter. - Run
ping <DefaultGateway>, replacing<DefaultGateway>with the gateway address shown on your PC. For example, if the displayed address is192.168.1.1, runping 192.168.1.1.
If the gateway replies but internet access still fails, the PC can reach the router; the problem may be with the modem or internet service. If the gateway does not reply, the PC may not be reaching the router over Wi-Fi. If your equipment and connection allow it, connect a computer directly to the modem with Ethernet and test again. If wired access works, that points toward the Wi-Fi router rather than the modem or service.
6. Reinstall the Wi-Fi adapter driver if earlier steps fail
This is especially relevant if the connection stopped working after a recent update. Before uninstalling the wireless adapter through Device Manager, download a backup driver from your PC manufacturer if possible. If the affected PC has no internet, you may need another computer and a USB flash drive to get the driver. Windows may reinstall the adapter driver after a restart; having the backup helps if it does not.

7. Use Windows Network reset only as a last resort
Microsoft says Network reset should be the last step you try. The setting removes installed network adapters and their settings, reinstalls adapters after restart, and resets network settings to their defaults. VPN client software may need to be installed or set up again, and Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reconfigured.

What the results suggest
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Other devices also cannot connect | The issue may involve the router, modem, or internet service rather than only this PC. | Restart the network equipment and check service status using another available connection. |
| Other devices connect, but this PC does not | A setting or adapter/driver issue on the Windows PC is more likely. | Reconnect to Wi-Fi, run the network commands, and consider driver troubleshooting later. |
| The PC can ping the default gateway but has no internet | The PC reaches the router; the fault may be beyond the Wi-Fi link. | Check the modem or service and test internet access from another device. |
| The gateway does not reply | The PC may not be reaching the router over Wi-Fi. | If feasible, test a direct Ethernet connection to the modem to help isolate the router. |
