Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by identifying your Kindle model: Wi-Fi support, software updates, and browser behavior vary by generation. Amazon says no Kindle supports 6 GHz Wi-Fi, and models released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3. Check compatibility before treating a connection or browsing failure as a broken device.
Then isolate what is failing. A Kindle that cannot join any network needs different checks from one that connects but cannot load a particular website, renders slowly, or appears frozen. The steps below begin with low-risk network and restart checks; use model-specific update guidance and leave factory reset until last.
Identify the Kindle and the specific failure
Find the model and generation, then note the software version and what you were trying to do. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page separates update information by model. Check it before downloading software or following model-specific browser advice.
“Refresh problem” can describe several different symptoms:
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- The Kindle cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network.
- It connects to Wi-Fi, but one website will not load or sign-in will not work.
- A page is stale or slow to render.
- The whole screen is frozen or responds slowly.
These symptoms do not have one established common cause. Amazon’s cited guidance does not document a universal browser refresh command or guarantee that older Kindle browsers can display modern websites. Avoid assuming a particular button, key combination, or gesture applies to every model.
Check Wi-Fi compatibility and basic settings
Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi. Devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. Check the router’s band and security settings against the Kindle’s release generation; do not try to connect a pre-2021 model to a 5 GHz-only network.

- Turn off Airplane Mode and confirm the network name and password.
- Check whether another phone, tablet, or computer can join the same network.
- Move the Kindle closer to the router and, if practical, reduce nearby wireless interference or network congestion.
- If the network name is hidden, follow Amazon’s internet connection instructions and choose “Other” to enter the exact network name and password manually.
Test another network and check for a sign-in page
Try connecting the Kindle to a phone’s personal hotspot. If it works there, Amazon says the issue is with the original network or its settings. If it cannot connect there either, the Kindle, its software, or its account/device condition becomes more likely; the hotspot test alone does not identify which.
Public Wi-Fi and some hotspots require a separate sign-in, such as a welcome page, PIN, voucher, or one-time password. Amazon recommends opening a simple page in the Kindle browser to check for the provider’s welcome page. Follow the provider’s instructions if one appears. Amazon’s guidance does not guarantee that an older Kindle browser will support every sign-in portal.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Restart a frozen or slow Kindle
For intermittent freezes or slow performance, Amazon recommends a restart. Press and hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank. Keep holding it for 40 seconds, then release; the Kindle should reboot after a few seconds. This is a restart, not a factory reset.
Update software only for the confirmed model
Amazon says software updates download and install automatically when a Kindle is connected wirelessly. For a manual update, use the model-specific instructions on Amazon’s software update page: select the exact Kindle before downloading, because update versions differ by generation.

- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.

- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
The manual route involves downloading the update on a desktop computer and transferring it to the Kindle. Use a USB data cable that is compatible with the confirmed model and port; the model is not specified here, so a particular connector or cable cannot be recommended. Amazon describes USB file transfer in its Kindle 11th Generation setup guidance, but that page does not establish which cable fits other generations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a website fails but Wi-Fi works
If the Kindle joins a network but only one site fails, first check whether a welcome or login page is waiting in the browser. If no portal appears, distinguish a site-specific failure from a device-wide connection failure by trying another simple page. The available Amazon guidance does not provide a compatibility matrix for modern websites on older Kindle browsers, so a site may require browser features the device does not have. That is a possible compatibility limit, not a confirmed diagnosis of a particular Kindle or website.

To narrow down model-specific browser advice, establish the Kindle generation, software version, and exact site or task that fails. Do not assume that a refresh control or browser setting from another Kindle generation exists on yours.
Factory reset only after lower-impact checks
A factory reset is destructive: Amazon says it removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and deregisters the Kindle. Sync or otherwise save anything important where possible, and make sure you can register the device again before proceeding.
Reserve reset for a persistent problem after checking network compatibility, testing another network, restarting, and applying an appropriate model-specific update. Follow Amazon’s factory reset instructions for the confirmed model.
