Start by checking whether the WD NVMe SSD appears in your computer’s BIOS/UEFI. If it does not, the problem is below Windows: check the M.2 slot and system configuration with your PC or motherboard maker. If BIOS sees it, use Windows Disk Management and Device Manager to determine whether the drive is offline, lacks a volume or drive letter, or has a device error. Do not initialize or format a used drive until you have considered data recovery; formatting destroys data on the selected partition.

First, find where detection fails

Note whether the SSD is a boot drive or secondary storage, then check whether the computer detects it in BIOS/UEFI. The menus and labels differ by manufacturer; consult the computer or motherboard documentation for the correct way to check. Western Digital’s internal-drive detection guide, updated September 17, 2026, advises checking drive or connection settings, M.2 or PCI-Express slot configuration, boot sequence, and motherboard firmware or drivers according to the system maker’s instructions.

  • Not listed in BIOS/UEFI: Windows cannot repair a drive the firmware does not detect. Check the system maker’s guidance for slot compatibility and configuration. If the SSD remains absent after careful checks, consult the maker and WD about warranty or recovery options.
  • Listed in BIOS/UEFI: Continue in Windows. The issue may be the disk’s status, partition, drive letter, or a device/driver error rather than physical detection.

Do not routinely change storage-controller mode or disable Secure Boot as a detection fix. BIOS changes can affect Windows startup and Windows 11 setup requirements; follow the system maker’s instructions before changing them.

If BIOS detects the SSD, check Windows

Inspect Disk Management

Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management, searching for it in Windows, or pressing Win + R, entering diskmgmt.msc, and pressing Enter. Find the disk by its capacity and status before making changes.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
  • Offline: If this is the correct disk, right-click its disk label and select Online.
  • New and empty: A new disk may need initialization, a partition, and a volume. In Disk Management, initialize it and create a simple volume. Microsoft recommends GPT for modern UEFI systems and MBR for older systems without UEFI support.
  • Existing disk marked uninitialized: Stop if it contains files you need. Initializing can write a new partition table; investigate the cause and consider recovery before proceeding.
  • Volume exists but has no drive letter: If appropriate, right-click the volume and use Change Drive Letter and Paths to assign a letter. Apps that depend on the former letter may need to be updated. See WD’s Windows 10/11 drive-letter instructions.

Protect data before destructive actions

Do not format a drive as a generic detection fix. Microsoft warns, “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance. If the drive holds needed data, avoid initialization, formatting, or other writes until you have chosen a backup or recovery path.

If Device Manager shows an error

Open Device Manager, locate the SSD or related storage device, and open Properties to record the exact error code. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for that code rather than applying a generic driver fix. For example, Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance recommends uninstalling and rescanning for hardware for Code 28; Code 29 calls for enabling the device in BIOS or consulting the computer maker; and Code 31 points to reinstalling or updating the driver. These examples do not cover every code.

WD’s older Dashboard detection troubleshooting article names possible causes including unsupported drives, outdated or incompatible drivers, a drive absent from BIOS, failed hardware, third-party software or enclosures, and certain RAID-slot configurations. It says Windows’ built-in NVMe driver, stornvme, provides the best compatibility. Because that article refers to retired Dashboard software, treat the note as context and prioritize current Windows and computer-manufacturer instructions.

Check WD software and firmware support before updating

Western Digital Dashboard is end-of-support. WD’s notice, updated June 10, 2026, says Kitfox provides similar features for HDDs and identifies SanDisk Dashboard as supporting SSD products. Check WD’s Dashboard end-of-support notice and confirm the exact SSD is supported before installing or relying on a utility. WD’s firmware-check guidance lists supported drives and notes that other drives may appear in Kitfox without being supported. An old Dashboard download is not the current fix.

  • Multitask with breathtaking responsiveness, transfer files faster, and improve your workflow with NVMe and Western Digital nCache 4.0 Technologies.
  • Move your data to your new drive with free downloadable Acronis True Image for Western Digital data migration software.

WD says drive firmware is installed during manufacture and is normally the final firmware available; a properly working drive does not need an upgrade. If an update is offered for your supported model, follow the current official instructions and back up important data first.

When to pursue recovery, warranty service, or replacement

Choose the next step based on where detection fails and whether the data matters. If Windows can see the disk but its status is unclear—or it is a used disk marked uninitialized—prioritize preserving data. If the drive is missing from BIOS after careful checks or appears to have failed, consult WD’s warranty and recovery information and the system maker’s guidance before buying a replacement.
