When a video will not play, first check whether the problem is limited to one clip, one site, or one browser. Try another video, open the same video in a private window, and compare it in a second browser before deleting data or changing settings. Those tests help narrow down whether to investigate an extension, saved browser data, media compatibility, protected-content settings, the network, or the site itself.
1. Find out how much is affected
Start with low-impact comparisons. Reload the page, try another video on the same site, then try a different video site. If possible, open the original video in another browser. Record whether the player is blank, shows an error, plays audio without a picture, or does not respond at all.
- One clip fails: The clip, its format, or the provider’s player may be responsible.
- One site fails: The site’s player or service is a more likely place to investigate than browser-wide settings.
- One browser fails: Check that browser’s profile, extensions, media support, and playback settings.
- Several browsers or sites fail: Widen the check to the device, network, or service availability.
These comparisons narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a cause. A provider may have its own player requirements, and there is no universal test that identifies every site-side issue.
2. Test a private or incognito window
Open the failing video in a private or incognito window. If it works there but not in your usual window, focus on extensions and saved browser data in the normal profile. Private-window behavior can vary with browser settings, so treat the result as a clue rather than a definitive diagnosis.

Check extensions before removing data
- In your regular browser window, temporarily turn off extensions, especially ad blockers or privacy filters.
- Reload the video and test playback.
- If playback returns, re-enable extensions one at a time, testing after each, to identify a conflict.
Mozilla notes that ad-blocking software or extensions can prevent media from playing. Google Chrome Help also identifies extensions, plugins, cache, and browser data as possible causes of video or game problems: Chrome Help: Fix videos and games that won’t play and Mozilla Support: Fix common audio and video issues.
Clear only the affected site’s data if needed
If disabling extensions does not help but the private-window test did, try clearing cached files or site data for the affected site rather than deleting all browsing data. Broad deletion can sign you out of websites. After clearing, reload the page and sign in again if asked. Google lists saved cache or browser data among possible causes; the exact controls for clearing one site’s data vary by browser version and platform.

3. Update and restart the browser
Install any available browser update, then close and reopen the browser and test the video again. Use the browser’s built-in About or update page; exact menu names differ across versions and operating systems. Updating is a general maintenance check, not proof that an outdated browser caused the failure.
4. Check format and codec compatibility
If only certain files fail, or a video plays sound but shows no picture, the file’s format or codec may not be supported by the browser and device. Microsoft says unsupported formats can cause Edge to play audio without video or fail to play the file. Its example is XAVC, which Edge’s built-in playback stack does not support on Windows 10 or Windows 11. That example does not establish that every video with audio-only playback has the same cause.

Check the content provider’s playback requirements and your operating-system edition before installing a codec or changing system components. Browser and device support can differ, so a video that fails in one setup may work in another. See Microsoft Edge: Video playback issues.
5. Treat protected video errors separately
Subscription and other DRM-protected videos use a different playback path from ordinary clips. If regular videos work but protected content does not, check whether the browser allows protected content. Microsoft identifies blocked encrypted-media modules as one possible cause and documents the error “Playback of protected content is not enabled.” Security policies may also affect encrypted media components. Use the browser or provider’s guidance for that specific error rather than installing codecs intended for unsupported file formats.

6. Investigate hardware acceleration only if symptoms point to it
Hardware acceleration is worth checking after simpler tests fail, particularly when symptoms suggest a decoding or rendering problem. In Edge, enter edge://gpu in the address bar and inspect the Video Acceleration Information section for codec acceleration details. You can use a reversible change to the browser’s hardware-acceleration setting as a diagnostic: change it, restart the browser, and retest. If the result does not improve, restore the original setting. Disabling acceleration is not a universal fix.
7. Check the network and service
If multiple browsers or sites are affected, test another network if practical and check whether the video provider reports an outage. Google includes resetting the internet connection in its troubleshooting guidance. Restarting a modem or router can be a later diagnostic if the problem appears network-wide, but it is not the likely answer to every playback failure.

8. Know when to contact support
If the problem remains, gather details that distinguish a site issue from a browser or device issue:
- Browser name and version, plus operating system and edition.
- The site and video affected, and the exact error message.
- Whether audio plays, whether another video works, and whether another browser plays the same video.
- Whether private-window playback, disabling extensions, clearing site data, or switching networks changed the result.
Contact the site when the failure is limited to its videos. If playback fails broadly in one browser, consult that browser’s support; if several browsers fail on the same device, include the device and network details when seeking help.
