If V-Sync makes controls feel delayed or motion stutter, first compare the affected game with V-Sync off, then check whether its frame rate is falling below your display’s refresh rate. The right fix depends on whether you prioritize lower input delay, tear-free motion, or a balance—and whether your monitor and graphics card support variable refresh rate (VRR).

Why V-Sync can cause input lag or stuttering

Traditional V-Sync synchronizes rendered frames with a display’s refresh cycle to reduce screen tearing. That synchronization can make input feel less immediate: NVIDIA identifies V-Sync backpressure as a source of latency and recommends turning V-Sync off when a player is willing to tolerate tearing. There is no single delay figure that applies to every game and system.

Stutter is a separate issue. If a game cannot sustain the display’s refresh rate, conventional V-Sync may produce uneven motion. NVIDIA’s example describes a 60 Hz display dropping to a lower rate such as 45 or 30 frames per second; those are illustrative figures, not guaranteed behavior for every game, display, or synchronization method. NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync explanation describes its approach as dynamically turning V-Sync on and off to maintain a more stable frame rate.

Compare the sync options before changing hardware

Option Latency and tearing When to compare it Requirements or trade-offs
V-Sync off Can reduce V-Sync-related latency, but tearing may appear. When responsive controls matter more than tear-free presentation. No VRR requirement; results vary by game and system. NVIDIA latency guidance.
Conventional V-Sync Reduces tearing, but may add perceived input delay; stutter can occur if frame rate falls below refresh. When tearing is distracting and the game can hold a stable frame rate near the display’s refresh. Fixed-refresh behavior depends on game performance and display settings. NVIDIA Adaptive VSync.
G-SYNC or FreeSync (VRR) Matches display refresh behavior to frame rate to reduce tearing and stutter within supported operating conditions. When both the display and graphics configuration support the relevant VRR technology. Confirm compatibility, connection, and that the feature is enabled in the display and graphics software. NVIDIA G-SYNC documentation; AMD FreeSync.
Frame-rate cap with sync Can help avoid frames exceeding refresh and support tear-free presentation; the latency trade-off depends on the sync path. When FPS regularly exceeds display refresh, or when using a VRR setup that benefits from staying within its operating range. Choose a cap for the specific monitor, game, and sync method; there is no universal cap in the cited guidance. AMD FreeSync guidance; NVIDIA latency guidance.

Test changes in a repeatable order

  1. Establish a baseline. In the affected game, use the same scene or repeatable action for each comparison. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped.
  2. Try V-Sync off. Compare control response and tearing. Keep it off if lower perceived latency is the priority and the tearing is acceptable; NVIDIA’s latency guide identifies V-Sync backpressure as a possible latency source.
  3. Watch frame rate against refresh rate. If motion stutters with V-Sync on, check whether the game is sustaining the display’s configured refresh rate. A drop below the cap is a plausible cause with conventional V-Sync; lowering demanding in-game graphics settings may help if it stabilizes performance.
  4. Check VRR support and enable it at both ends. Confirm the monitor and GPU support a compatible G-SYNC or FreeSync configuration. Enable the feature in the monitor’s own settings and in the relevant graphics software. AMD’s setup instructions recommend enabling FreeSync on the monitor and in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition: AMD FreeSync setup instructions.
  5. Compare a frame-rate cap when FPS exceeds refresh. AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame-rate cap for tear-free presentation when game FPS regularly exceeds display refresh. NVIDIA’s low-latency G-SYNC guidance describes V-Sync with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency and an automatic cap below refresh; it notes slightly higher latency than uncapped FPS with Reflex. Exact controls and results depend on the game and driver.
  6. Use an in-game latency option if available. NVIDIA Reflex requires game support and reduces PC latency by coordinating CPU and GPU work. NVIDIA says Reflex is more effective than its driver Ultra Low Latency mode and overrides that mode when both are enabled. Look for Reflex in the game’s own graphics or latency settings.
  7. Check display and game configuration before assuming hardware failure. Verify the display is set to its intended refresh rate, review VRR support and connection, compare fullscreen and windowed behavior, and check per-game graphics-driver overrides. The cited platform guidance does not establish V-Sync symptoms as evidence of a defective component.

When a VRR monitor is worth considering

A VRR display is an optional upgrade only if your current monitor lacks a suitable feature and your graphics configuration can use it. Verify compatibility for the specific monitor model, GPU, and connection rather than relying on a generic “G-SYNC Compatible” or “FreeSync” label. AMD’s current FreeSync product page reports more than 4,000 certified displays; that is AMD’s published, dynamic ecosystem figure, not an independently verified count.
