Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA “USB Composite Device” error in Windows 11 does not usually mean you need to download a driver named “USB Composite Device.” Standard composite USB hardware is normally managed by Windows’ built-in USB Generic Parent Driver, Usbccgp.sys. The useful first step is to find the exact Device Manager error code, because Code 10 requires a different response from Code 28, Code 29, or Code 12.
Use the steps below in order. They cover driver updates, reinstalling the device, rollback after Windows Update, command-line rescanning, and hardware or power problems that can look like driver failures.
1. Check the exact Device Manager error code
Do not start by downloading a random “USB composite driver.” First identify what Windows is reporting:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Find the USB device with a yellow exclamation mark. It may appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, Imaging devices, or another category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status box on the General tab. Note both the message and the code.
“USB composite device driver error” is a general description, not one particular Windows 11 failure. Microsoft documents separate fixes for Device Manager Codes 1, 3, 10, 18, 19, 28, 29, 31, 32, 43, and others.

2. Try Windows’ automatic driver update
For a normal composite device, Windows should select its in-box class and parent drivers automatically. To make Windows check again:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the problem device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- When the process finishes, select Close.
If Device Manager does not find anything, use the Windows Update option shown in the same driver dialog, such as Search for updated drivers on Windows Update. You can also check optional drivers directly:
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Additional options, select Optional updates.
- Expand the driver updates, select the relevant update, and choose Download and install.
Optional driver updates are not installed automatically. In Windows Update settings, also ensure Receive updates for other Microsoft products is turned on.
3. Reinstall the USB device entry
A damaged device entry or failed driver installation can be corrected by removing the device and letting Windows detect it again.

- In Device Manager, right-click the problem device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- In the confirmation window, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows: right-click Start → Shut down or sign out → Restart.
Windows will attempt to reinstall the appropriate driver after restarting. You can also force detection without restarting: in Device Manager, select Action on the menu bar and then Scan for hardware changes.
4. Install a manufacturer driver only when one is required
Windows normally supplies the composite USB driver. A manufacturer package may still be necessary for device-specific functions—for example, a scanner, phone, camera, docking station, or multifunction peripheral that needs more than the standard USB class support.

Download the package only from the official website of the device manufacturer or computer manufacturer. Match the package to your Windows 11 version and system architecture. Avoid third-party driver-updater applications and driver-download sites.
After downloading the official package:
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Browse…, choose the folder containing the driver files, and select OK.
- Select Next and complete the installation.
If the manufacturer provides an installer rather than an extracted driver folder, run that installer according to its instructions instead.
5. Use the error code to choose the right fix
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The device is not configured correctly. | On the device’s Driver tab, select Update Driver. If prompted, provide the built-in or manufacturer driver location. |
| 3 | The driver may be corrupted, or Windows may be low on memory or other resources. | Close unnecessary applications, then uninstall and reinstall the device driver. |
| 10 | The device cannot start. | Open Properties → Driver → Update Driver. If the issue continues, check the manufacturer’s support information for a device-specific cause. |
| 18 | The driver must be reinstalled. | Update the driver, or uninstall the device and use Action → Scan for hardware changes. |
| 19 | The registry configuration for the device is incomplete or damaged. | Uninstall and reinstall the device. If the problem began after an update, consider Roll Back Driver or System Restore. |
| 28 | No driver is installed. | Uninstall the device, scan for hardware changes, and obtain the official manufacturer package if Windows cannot provide a driver. |
| 29 | Device firmware did not provide the required resources. | Check whether the device is enabled or configured in the computer’s BIOS/UEFI. Follow the computer manufacturer’s instructions; reinstalling the Windows driver may not resolve this code. |
| 31 | Windows cannot load the required driver. | Reinstall it through the Hardware Update process, or uninstall the device and scan for hardware changes. |
| 12 | Two devices may be competing for resources, or the system cannot assign enough resources. | Check BIOS/UEFI resource allocation and the conflicting hardware. Repeatedly downloading the same USB driver will not fix a resource conflict. |
For other codes, use the wording in Device status as the starting point rather than assuming the problem is the composite driver itself.
6. Roll back the driver if the problem started after an update
Rollback is available only if Windows has a previous driver to restore, and it requires administrator permission.
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason, select Yes, and restart if Windows requests it.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, there is no previous driver stored for that device. In that case, use the update or reinstall process instead.
7. Rescan and inspect the device with PnPUtil
Windows includes pnputil.exe, which can rescan hardware and list devices reporting problems. Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator and run pnputil /scan-devices.

- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
8. Rule out power, cable, port, and hub problems
A USB connection problem can produce symptoms that look like a driver error. Before making deeper Windows changes, test the physical connection:
- Connect a power-hungry device to its external power supply.
- Plug a laptop into AC power rather than relying on a low battery.
- Disconnect unused USB devices that may be consuming available power.
- Connect the device directly to the computer instead of through a hub or dock.
- Try a different USB port and inspect the port for dirt or damage.
- Try a known-compatible cable. A USB-C connector does not guarantee that the cable supports every feature.
- Test the device on another computer if possible.
For USB-C hardware, the capabilities of the computer’s port, cable, and device must all match. Alternate Mode support works automatically when the hardware supports it; there is no Windows setting that can enable an unsupported USB-C Alternate Mode.
What not to do
Do not treat Usbccgp.sys as a normal standalone download. Windows includes USB class drivers and services them through Windows Update. Downloading a similarly named file from an unofficial site can introduce malware or an incompatible driver.
Also avoid deleting registry UpperFilters or LowerFilters, disabling USB selective suspend, or using a third-party driver updater as a universal fix. Those actions are not Microsoft’s general remedy for this error. Identify the code, update, roll back, or reinstall the affected device, then investigate power and hardware conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem is probably hardware
If the same device fails on multiple computers with different cables and ports, the device itself, its firmware, or its cable is a likely cause. If several USB devices fail on one computer, suspect the port, hub, dock, motherboard firmware, or power delivery. A Code 29 or Code 12 also points toward firmware or resource configuration rather than a missing composite driver.
For a device that works after a direct connection but fails through a dock, update the dock’s official firmware and driver package and check its power adapter. If it works on another PC but not yours, install BIOS/UEFI, chipset, USB-controller, or dock updates from the computer manufacturer’s support page—not from a generic driver site.

FAQ
Do I need to download a USB Composite Device driver for Windows 11?
Usually no. Standard composite USB devices use Windows’ built-in USB Generic Parent Driver, Usbccgp.sys, together with the relevant USB class driver. Download a separate package only when the device manufacturer supplies a supplementary driver for device-specific features.
Why does my USB Composite Device show Code 10?
Code 10 means Windows cannot start the device. Update the driver from Device Manager first. If that does not help, test another port or cable and check the manufacturer’s support page because the device driver may report a hardware-specific failure.
Will pnputil /scan-devices install the missing driver?
No. pnputil /scan-devices only scans for hardware changes. Use Device Manager, Windows Update, or an official manufacturer package to install a driver.
Should I delete UpperFilters and LowerFilters?
Not as a generic fix. Registry filter changes can affect other devices and are not Microsoft’s standard recommendation for a USB composite-device error. Start with the displayed Device Manager code and the update, rollback, or reinstall steps.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does the device work directly but not through my USB hub or dock?
The hub or dock may lack enough power, use an incompatible cable, have outdated firmware, or not support the device’s required USB-C capability. Connect directly, use external power where applicable, and install official dock updates.
The Bottom Line
Start with Device Manager → Properties → Device status, not a web search for a “USB Composite Device driver.” Update or reinstall the affected entry, roll it back if a recent update caused the failure, and use the official manufacturer package only when Windows’ built-in support is insufficient. If the error persists, test power, cables, ports, hubs, and the device on another computer—the failure may not be a driver problem at all.
