If “Updating Cloud Music Library” stays in the Music app on your Mac, first verify your Apple Account, subscription, Sync Library setting and internet connection. Then request an update from the Mac that holds the original music library. Apple does not give a set timeout for a cloud update, so work through these checks before deciding it is stuck.
Check the account, subscription and Sync Library setting
- Confirm the Apple Account. In Music, open the Account menu and check that you are signed in with the Apple Account used for Apple Music or iTunes Match. Sync Library requires one of those services. If Sync Library is unavailable, Apple lists an absent subscription or a different signed-in account as possible causes. See Apple’s Sync Library requirements.
- Enable Sync Library. Choose Music > Settings > General, then select Sync Library. The status appears at the bottom of the sidebar as “Updating Cloud Music Library.”
- Check every device. Make sure the Mac and the other devices are online, signed in to the same Apple Account and have Sync Library enabled. Apple’s guidance for missing or greyed-out songs recommends checking these basics.
Update the cloud library from the source Mac
On the computer that contains the original music library, open Music and choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library. If another Mac is waiting for songs held on this source computer, update the source first, then check the synced Mac. Leave the source Mac connected to the internet while the update runs.
Libraries can take longer to update when they contain more music, but Apple publishes no fixed duration for a normal update or a threshold that defines when one is stuck. Avoid repeatedly changing settings just because the status has not cleared quickly.
When only some songs are missing, check Cloud Status
If the whole library is not affected and only particular tracks fail to appear, use Songs view in Music and show the Cloud Status column. Apple describes these statuses and next steps:

- Waiting: The track has not appeared on your other devices yet. Keep the source computer online, choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library, and allow time for syncing.
- Exclamation mark: Music cannot find the original file. Locate that file or import it again from its source.
- No Longer Available: The item was removed from the Apple Music catalog. Search for an alternative version.
Use the Sync Library toggle only as a later step
Turning Sync Library off removes downloaded music from your devices. Before changing this setting, make a separate backup of your music library; Apple explicitly warns that Apple Music is not a backup service. A separate drive is one possible place to keep a backup, and Apple notes that a Music library can be stored in different locations, including an external hard drive: Apple’s Mac Music guide.
If you choose to turn Sync Library off and back on after the account, connectivity and source-library checks, reconnect on a good network and let the library sync. A larger library may take longer. These steps do not guarantee a fix, and Apple does not specify a fixed waiting period.

If the Mac still will not update
If the documented checks do not resolve the issue, contact Apple Support. If the problem began suddenly on several devices, check Apple’s system status before treating it as a Mac-specific fault. The available Apple guidance does not establish restarting, deleting caches or preference files, rebuilding the library database, changing security software, or reinstalling macOS as prescribed fixes for this particular status.
