Microsoft defines Windows setup error 0xC1900401 as “No packages to be downloaded.” That describes the result, not why your PC has no update package available. Microsoft does not document a single fix for this code, so work through the checks below in order: identify the failed update, run Windows Update’s troubleshooter, verify the package applies to your PC, and use cache or system repair steps only if simpler checks fail.
What does error 0xc1900401 mean?
Microsoft Learn maps 0xC1900401 to MOSETUP_E_UA_NO_PACKAGES_TO_DOWNLOAD, meaning “No packages to be downloaded.” The mapping appears in Microsoft’s Windows 10 upgrade resolution procedures. It is a setup result code, not a diagnosis of the cause on a particular computer. It does not, by itself, prove that Windows files are corrupted, a driver is faulty, or antivirus software blocked an update.
Do not confuse it with nearby code 0xC1900402; Microsoft lists that as a separate code. Microsoft’s general Windows Update guidance offers troubleshooting steps but does not identify any of them as a guaranteed, code-specific fix.
How to fix update error 0xc1900401
Start with the low-risk checks, then move to administrator-level repairs only if the failure persists. Before troubleshooting, back up important personal files, as Microsoft recommends in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

1. Identify the failed update and restart
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Note the update name or KB number and the date it failed. This helps distinguish a feature upgrade from an individual update.
- Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
If you use Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history to find the failed entry. Settings labels can vary slightly by Windows version.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Windows Update. Follow the on-screen instructions, restart if prompted, and check for updates again. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Its troubleshooting article describes these as general steps, not a specific remedy for 0xC1900401.
3. Check basic update conditions
- Keep the PC powered on and connected to the internet while checking for updates.
- Confirm the date and time are set automatically.
- Use an administrator account when a step asks for elevated permissions.
- Disconnect nonessential external devices, such as storage drives or printers, and retry.
4. Confirm the update is applicable to your PC
Use the update name or KB number from Update history to check that the package matches your installed Windows release and processor architecture, and that any required prerequisite updates are installed. Microsoft’s Windows Update issue guidance recommends checking package version, architecture, and prerequisites.
If installing a package manually, find it using the exact KB number and obtain it from a Microsoft source. Do not select a package based only on the error code; the code does not identify which update your device needs.

5. Check free space and drivers
Check the failed update’s own requirements and the space available on the Windows drive. For a Windows OS upgrade, Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance specifies at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB free for a 64-bit OS; these figures are not requirements for fixing 0xC1900401 specifically. If a small-drive PC lacks room during an upgrade, Microsoft says a USB drive may help provide additional space. That is a conditional space option, not a direct fix for this error.
If you recently added hardware, check for updated third-party drivers from the hardware manufacturer. The error code alone does not establish that a driver is responsible.

6. Reset the Windows Update cache
If the earlier checks do not help, Microsoft documents resetting the update cache. This requires administrator permissions. One approach is to stop the Windows Update service, delete the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. Microsoft’s guidance also describes renaming the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders from an elevated Command Prompt.
Because this involves system folders and administrator actions, follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully. If you are not comfortable with Command Prompt or changing these folders, contact Microsoft support rather than improvising commands.
7. Repair Windows system files if the failure continues
Microsoft’s advanced troubleshooting guidance describes running these commands in an elevated Command Prompt, in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish before running the next, then restart and check Windows Update again. Microsoft cautions that advanced command-line procedures require administrator permissions and are intended for users comfortable using the command line. The commands are general system-repair steps; they are not a documented code-specific cure for 0xC1900401.

If the same update continues to fail after these steps, keep the Update history entry and note the exact KB or update name, Windows version and build, and the full error details. Windows Setup logs, including Panther or rollback logs where applicable, can provide context for a device-specific investigation. The code by itself cannot establish the cause; share those details with Microsoft support or a qualified technician.
What Windows 10 support ending means for this error
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC continues to work, but support status is separate from the meaning of 0xC1900401. Check Microsoft’s current upgrade and installation guidance and lifecycle information for your edition and eligibility.
