If Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) is missing from Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, first check whether your PC has a fingerprint reader and whether Windows detects it. Windows Hello cannot offer fingerprint setup without compatible reader hardware. For an external reader, Windows version, Enhanced sign-in security (ESS), and work or school policies can also affect availability.
1. Check Sign-in options and identify the reader
Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Windows settings vary by device configuration, so a missing fingerprint option is not by itself proof of a Windows defect. Windows Hello fingerprint setup requires a fingerprint reader.
Check the specifications or support page for your exact PC model to confirm whether it has a built-in sensor. If it does, find out whether Windows detects that sensor and whether the correct driver is installed. If the PC has no reader, Microsoft says you can connect a compatible one over USB.
Before buying an external reader, verify Windows Hello compatibility, compatibility with your Windows version and ESS configuration, connection and port requirements, and the manufacturer’s driver and support information. Compatibility should be confirmed for your PC and Windows setup; a USB connection alone does not guarantee the reader will work.

- COMPACT DESIGN: Sleek and portable biometric scanner features a space-saving footprint that fits comfortably on any desk without cluttering your workspace.
2. Check Enhanced sign-in security for an external reader
Windows 11’s Enhanced sign-in security (ESS) can affect whether a third-party fingerprint reader works. The relevant settings and behavior differ by Windows version. Microsoft documents an ESS control in Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer; a reader that does not support ESS may not work while ESS is enabled. Version 23H2 uses a differently worded external camera or fingerprint-reader setting.
Microsoft’s guidance also notes that some PCs may not show the control because the device or sensor does not meet the conditions. A work or school administrator can also restrict non-ESS peripherals. On a managed PC, ask the administrator before changing security settings.

- Windows Hello for Windows 10/11 - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS.
- Plug-and-Play Fingerprint Login - No extra app is needed on most genuine Windows systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, set up fingerprint sign-in through Windows Hello, and unlock your PC without typing long passwords every time.
- Fast 0.5s 360° Recognition - Capacitive fingerprint technology supports quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition helps read your fingerprint from different angles for faster, smoother daily login.
- Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
- Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.
Turning off ESS to allow a non-ESS reader can remove existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials, including passkeys. Review Microsoft’s version-specific guidance before changing the setting: Enhanced sign-in security for Windows Hello.
Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 Windows 11 26H1 preview note describes ESS support for peripheral fingerprint sensors as beginning to roll out. That availability is dependent on the build and rollout, so do not assume it is available on every Windows 11 PC: Windows 11 26H1 preview announcement.

3. Update the driver for the exact PC or sensor
If your PC has a built-in reader—or Windows is not detecting a connected reader—check for driver updates. Use the PC maker’s official support page or update utility and select the package for your exact model and Windows version. For a third-party sensor, use the sensor maker’s official support information. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different model.
Microsoft documents a specific ELAN fingerprint-driver issue affecting some computers upgraded from Windows 10: certain driver versions can cause failures or crashes in applications using related DLLs. This is a narrow, documented scenario, not a general explanation for every missing fingerprint option. See Microsoft’s ELAN fingerprint driver guidance.

4. If the option appears but scans fail
When Fingerprint recognition is present but enrollment or sign-in does not work, use Microsoft’s recognition troubleshooting steps. These help with reading a finger; they will not make an absent, unsupported, or undetected sensor appear.
- Clean and dry the reader and your finger.
- Remove and re-register your fingerprint.
- Capture the finger from different angles during enrollment.
- Add another finger as an alternative.
For further steps, see Microsoft’s Windows Hello fingerprint troubleshooting guidance.

5. Restore access and retry setup
If fingerprint sign-in is unavailable, use your PIN or password to sign in, if possible. Then return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options after checking the sensor, driver, and any applicable ESS or organizational restrictions.
If fingerprint sign-in worked before and stopped after a change, consider whether a recently installed driver, app, or Windows update coincided with the problem. On a Surface with a fingerprint reader in a detachable Type Cover, Microsoft’s guidance includes reconnecting the Type Cover if its reader stops working: Troubleshoot Surface Type Cover or keyboard issues.
What to check if the setting is still missing
The right next step depends on the device, rather than a universal Windows 11 fix. Gather these details before contacting the PC maker or your administrator:
Quick Recap
- Exact PC model and whether its fingerprint reader is built-in or external.
- Windows version and build.
- Whether Windows detects the sensor and which driver is installed.
- For an external reader, its Windows Hello and ESS compatibility and the current ESS setting.
- Whether the PC is managed by a work or school organization.
