This message usually means a website, web-application firewall (WAF), reverse proxy, or network security system rejected a request—not that Chrome, Edge, or Firefox is necessarily broken. There is no single guaranteed fix: start by opening the site’s homepage and navigating to the problem page, then test the URL, browser, site data, and network in turn.
If the rejection page shows a Support ID or Request ID, save it before troubleshooting. It can help the site or network administrator find the blocked request in security logs.
1. Determine where the block occurs
- Open the site’s homepage and navigate to the problem page instead of using an old bookmark or saved deep link.
- Check whether the error affects one site or several unrelated sites. If it affects one site, suspect that site’s URL, session, account, rules, or server. If it affects many sites, suspect a browser, network, VPN, proxy, firewall, or filtering issue.
- Try another browser or device.
- If possible, try another network, such as a phone hotspot. If that works, the original network, public IP address, proxy, or filtering system may be involved.
Record the exact URL, date and time with time zone, what action triggered the rejection, and the complete Support ID or Request ID. F5 documentation describes support IDs as a way for administrators to trace blocked requests.
2. Test in a private browsing window
Try the page in Chrome Incognito, Edge InPrivate, or a Firefox Private Window. If it works there but not in a regular window, stored site data, an extension, or a profile-specific setting may be involved.

3. Clear data for the affected site
Removing only the affected site’s cookies and data is more targeted than clearing all browser data. It may sign you out or remove that site’s preferences or other stored information.
Chrome
- Select More (⋮) > Settings.
- Select Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions.
- Search for the site, select Delete next to it, and confirm.
- Reopen the site from its homepage and sign in again if needed.
To clear broader data, select More (⋮) > Delete browsing data, choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and, if needed, Cached images and files, then select Delete data. Deleting synced data may affect other signed-in devices.
Edge
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services. Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
- Choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and, if needed, Cached images and files, then select Clear now.
Edge distinguishes between data on the current device and data synchronized across devices. Turn off sync first if you want to limit deletion to the current device.
Firefox
To clear data for the open site, select the padlock icon to the left of the address bar, then select Clear Cookies and Site Data.

To remove data for a specific domain, select the Firefox menu (☰) > Settings > Privacy & Security. Under Cookies and Site Data, select Manage Data…, search for the site, select Remove Selected or Remove All Shown, and select Save Changes and OK.
4. Test without extensions
Extensions that modify requests, headers, cookies, URLs, scripts, VPN connections, or proxy settings can affect what a website receives.
- In Chrome, select More (⋮) > Extensions > Manage extensions, then turn extensions off.
- Reload the page and test again.
- If the error disappears, turn extensions on one at a time, testing after each one.
In Firefox, select the menu (☰) > Help > Troubleshoot Mode…, select Restart, then select Open in the confirmation window. Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions and themes. Chrome extensions that use VPN or proxy settings may still affect network traffic independently of ordinary site-access permissions.

5. Check the URL, session, and submitted data
A website may reject a particular URL, query string, form submission, or session even when its homepage works. Try these controlled checks:
- Type the domain manually, open the homepage, and follow the site’s links.
- Remove unnecessary URL parameters only if you understand what they do.
- Avoid repeatedly submitting the same form.
- Sign out, clear the site’s data, close the browser, and start a new session.
- If a form submission triggers the error, try a shorter or simpler value where appropriate.
Do not assume special characters are invalid in general. A support article for The Elder Scrolls Online describes a service-specific case involving special characters in account fields; that does not establish a general browser rule.

6. Temporarily check VPNs, proxies, and filtering
If you have authorization, temporarily disconnect a personal VPN, browser VPN extension, proxy, web-filtering software, or antivirus HTTPS inspection, then retry the page. A changed public IP address or request headers can affect how a WAF evaluates a request.
Do not permanently bypass company-managed security controls. If the site works only after a managed control is removed, contact your organization’s IT department. On workplace, school, government, and public networks, the relevant administrator may manage the network or proxy rather than your device.
7. Flush the Windows DNS cache only when relevant
DNS flushing may help if the site is resolving to an outdated or incorrect address. It does not normally remove a WAF block, repair a rejected cookie, or change a server-side security rule.
- Open Command Prompt in Windows.
- Run ipconfig /flushdns.
- Close and reopen the browser, then test the site again.
Microsoft documents /flushdns as flushing and resetting the local DNS client resolver cache.
8. Update and restart the browser
In Chrome, select More (⋮) > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on that page and may require a restart. Updating can help with general compatibility and security, but it is not a guaranteed fix for this rejection message.

9. Contact the website or network administrator
Contact the administrator if the error persists after clearing site data, happens in multiple browsers or devices, appears after a particular form submission, or includes a Support ID or Request ID. If you are on a managed network, contact its administrator as well.

Common claims that are wrong or incomplete
- “The browser blocked the URL.” Often incomplete: the browser may simply be displaying a response from the site or an intermediary security system.
- “Clearing all browser history always fixes it.” No. Clearing the affected site’s data is a more targeted first step, and a server-side or network-side block may remain.
- “Flush DNS is the fix.” DNS flushing is relevant to local DNS resolution problems; it does not clear cookies or change a WAF policy.
- “Restarting the router always fixes it.” A restart may repair a network fault or change a public IP address, but it will not correct a website rule, invalid form submission, or managed-network policy.
- “Use a VPN to get around it.” A VPN can change the source IP, make a request more suspicious, or violate site access rules. Test without a VPN unless your organization requires one.
- “The error proves the website is down.” Not necessarily. A security system can reject one URL, session, account, or network while the rest of the site remains available.
FAQ
Is “The requested URL was rejected” a browser error?
Usually, it means a website, WAF, reverse proxy, or network security system rejected the request. The browser may be displaying the response it received.
What does the Support ID mean?
It is a reference an administrator can use to locate a rejected request in security logs. Save it with the URL and exact time of the failure.
Will clearing cookies fix the error?
It may help if the site’s stored data or session is involved. Clear data for the affected domain first. It will not fix a server-side rule or necessarily resolve an account or network issue.

Why does the site work in a private window?
Stored site data, an extension, or a profile-specific setting may be affecting the normal browser window. Private-window extension behavior can differ, so test extensions and site data directly.
Should I use a VPN or restart my router?
Neither is a general fix. A VPN or router restart may change the network path or public IP, but could also leave the rejection unchanged. Test another network only to help identify where the issue lies, and follow your organization’s policies.
What should I send support if nothing works?
Send the Support ID or Request ID, URL if safe, time and time zone, browser and operating system, the action that failed, and whether other browsers, devices, or networks work. Do not send passwords, tokens, or secret access keys.
The Bottom Line
Start from the site’s homepage, then test a private window, clear only the affected site’s data, and check extensions. If the problem persists across browsers, devices, or networks, the URL, account, request, network, or website security rules may be involved. Give the administrator the Support ID and exact failure time rather than repeatedly changing browser settings.
