Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Seeing several msedgewebview2.exe entries in Task Manager is usually normal. The process belongs to Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, a component that lets Windows applications display HTML, JavaScript, and CSS inside their own interfaces. Microsoft lists applications such as Teams, Office, Outlook, Widgets, and Weather among its WebView2 users.
The important question is not simply “Why are there many WebView2 processes?” but which application is using them, and what is it displaying? WebView2 uses Chromium’s multi-process design, so one host application can create a manager process, GPU and utility processes, and one or more renderer processes. High memory usage usually comes from the host application or its web content rather than from the runtime alone.
First, confirm what is consuming the memory
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then check the Processes tab. In current Windows 11 releases, Windows may show individual WebView2 processes. On Windows 10 and some earlier Windows 11 builds, Task Manager may show the name of the application using WebView2 instead.
The Details tab shows the executable name as msedgewebview2.exe. These entries may be grouped together rather than grouped under the parent application. Do not assume the parent shown by Task Manager is correct if the list is sorted by a column other than Name; Microsoft documents that this grouping can be inaccurate in that situation.

| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Several WebView2 processes using modest memory | Normal Chromium-style process separation |
| One application’s WebView2 group grows while it is open | The host app or its embedded web content may be responsible |
| High GPU usage or visual glitches | Possible graphics-driver or hardware-acceleration issue |
| WebView2 returns after you end it | The owning application is still running and has restarted its dependency |
1. Close or restart the application using WebView2
Before changing Edge settings, close likely WebView2 hosts, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, Widgets, Weather, and any third-party application with a web-based interface. Check Task Manager again after each application closes.
If memory drops when one particular program exits, that program—not necessarily Microsoft Edge—is the useful lead. Reopen it and check whether the memory increase returns. Also install updates for that application through its normal update mechanism. A faulty add-in, continuously refreshing panel, large online document, or poorly optimized embedded page can cause the increase.
To contain the problem temporarily, select the suspected host application in Task Manager and choose End task. Ending msedgewebview2.exe directly may close or break the application that owns it, and the application can immediately launch the process again. Treat this as a short-term recovery step, not a fix.
2. If the problem is Edge, use Edge’s Browser Task Manager
When the high-memory process belongs to Microsoft Edge itself, Edge can identify the specific tab, extension, subframe, or utility process more clearly than Windows Task Manager.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Press Shift+Esc to open Browser Task Manager.
- Sort by Memory, then check CPU as well.
- Select the tab, extension, subframe, or utility process using excessive resources.
- Choose End process.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also asks for the full version shown at edge://settings/help, screenshots of Browser Task Manager sorted by CPU and memory, and the output from edge://discards when investigating an Edge resource problem. These details are more useful than a screenshot showing only a generic msedgewebview2.exe name.
3. Disable Edge’s own background activity
Edge can continue running its own background extensions and apps after all browser windows are closed. This setting affects Microsoft Edge, not WebView2 instances owned by Teams, Office, Outlook, Widgets, or other applications.
- Enter
edge://settings/systemin Edge’s address bar. - Turn off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
- Close every Edge window and check Task Manager again.
Do not treat this switch as a universal WebView2 disable button. Each WebView2 host has its own process lifetime and can continue running independently.
4. Reduce Edge tab memory with sleeping tabs
If ordinary Edge tabs are responsible, open edge://settings/system/managePerformance. Turn on Save resources with sleeping tabs, adjust the inactivity time, and add exceptions for sites that must remain active.
Sleeping tabs applies to Edge tabs. It does not put an arbitrary WebView2 control inside another Windows application to sleep. If Outlook or Teams is responsible, troubleshoot that application instead.

5. Check hardware acceleration and the graphics driver
A graphics problem can make Edge or a Chromium-based embedded view use unusually high resources, display a blank area, or flicker.
- Open
edge://gpu. - Review Graphics Feature Status.
- If rendering is software-only, update the graphics driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer.
- Open
edge://settings/system. - Make sure Use graphics acceleration when available is enabled.
- Restart Edge and test again.
This check is primarily for Edge. A separate application may expose its own graphics or rendering settings.
6. Update Edge and allow WebView2 to update
To update Edge, select Settings and more (⋯) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Apply any update offered on that page, then restart Edge.

WebView2 normally uses Microsoft’s Evergreen distribution. It receives feature and security updates automatically, and WebView2 and Edge have separate update policies. Disabling Edge updates does not necessarily disable WebView2 updates.
A downloaded Evergreen Runtime version is used when the WebView2 host restarts. If Teams, Outlook, or another host has remained open, it may continue using the older runtime until that application is fully closed and reopened. Restart the affected host—or restart Windows if you cannot determine which host remains open.
To check whether the Runtime is installed, Microsoft documents these registry locations on 64-bit Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftEdgeUpdateClients{F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}

Look for a pv value greater than 0.0.0.0. On 32-bit Windows, the machine-wide path is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftEdgeUpdateClients{F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}; the per-user path is unchanged.

7. Isolate a problematic Edge extension
If Edge is the host and the problem began after installing an extension, isolate it rather than removing WebView2.

- Open
edge://extensions/. - Turn off every extension.
- Use Edge normally for a while and watch Task Manager or Browser Task Manager.
- Turn extensions on one at a time.
- Remove or update the extension that causes the memory increase to return.
This test does not identify a memory problem inside Teams, Outlook, or another WebView2 application because those programs do not use Edge’s extension list.
8. Clear Edge’s cache if browser data is the likely cause
- Select Settings and more > History > Open history page.
- Select Delete browsing data.
- Set Time range to All time.
- Select Browsing history and Cached images and files.
- Select Clear now.
This clears Microsoft Edge browsing data. It is not a guaranteed purge of the local data used by every WebView2 host. Embedded applications may store their own profiles and caches in separate locations.
9. Repair Microsoft Edge
Repair Edge when the browser itself is unstable, repeatedly crashes, or behaves incorrectly after updates. It will not prove that Edge owns the WebView2 process.
- Close Edge for every signed-in Windows user.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, open its menu, and select Modify.
- Approve the prompt by selecting Yes.
- Make sure the PC is connected to the internet.
- Select Repair.
Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data or settings. If Modify is unavailable, Edge was probably installed and managed by an organization; contact the system administrator.
10. Test whether an Edge profile is corrupted
A temporary profile separates profile problems from installation problems. Open Command Prompt and run this command exactly:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --user-data-dir="%TEMP%edge-test-profile"
If Edge works normally with this temporary profile, the original Edge profile is a likely cause. This test does not diagnose a memory problem in a separate application that embeds WebView2.

Defaultfolder toDefault.old. - Start Edge and allow it to create a new
Defaultfolder. - If the browser is stable, close it and copy necessary data—such as Bookmarks—from
Default.oldto the new profile.
11. Reset Edge settings as a final browser-side step
Open edge://settings/reset and select Restore settings to their default values. Microsoft says this preserves bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. It resets items including pinned tabs, the startup page, search engine, and extensions, so review the changes afterward.
When WebView2 keeps returning
WebView2 is a shared dependency, not a normal browser tab that can simply be uninstalled. Ending it may cause the owning program to restart it. Uninstalling Microsoft Edge also does not stop WebView2 from working; Microsoft states that Edge can be uninstalled without breaking the Runtime.

If one application consistently recreates a high-memory process, update, repair, reset, or reinstall that application according to its vendor’s instructions. For a WebView2 application that exposes the embedded control, right-click the control and choose Inspect. Edge DevTools can then use the Memory and Performance tools to investigate leaks or expensive content. The edge://inspect page can also open Inspect with Edge Developer Tools for monitoring WebView2 content and processes.
For a managed work PC, report the application name, the time memory rises, the affected feature or window, Task Manager details, and whether closing the host releases memory. That gives IT a reproducible application problem instead of an ambiguous request to remove msedgewebview2.exe.
FAQ
Is msedgewebview2.exe malware?
Usually not. It is the executable for Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, a Microsoft component used by Edge and many other applications. Verify the responsible application and the executable’s location before making a security decision, but multiple entries alone are normal.
Can I disable or uninstall WebView2?
Removing it is generally not a practical fix. Teams, Office, Outlook, Widgets, and other applications may need it, and applications can reinstall or check for it when they launch. Uninstalling Microsoft Edge does not disable WebView2.
Why are there so many WebView2 processes?
WebView2 uses Chromium’s multi-process model. A host can create manager, GPU, utility, and renderer processes, and an application can create separate renderer processes for multiple WebView2 controls.
Will turning off Edge background apps stop Teams or Outlook WebView2 processes?
No. The switch at edge://settings/system controls Microsoft Edge’s own background extensions and apps. Other WebView2 hosts have separate processes and lifetimes.
Why does WebView2 restart after I end it?
The application that owns the WebView2 control is probably still open and has relaunched its dependency. Close or end the host application, then reopen it after updating or repairing it.
How do I find the application responsible?
Check Task Manager’s Processes tab first, then close likely hosts one at a time. For Edge, press Shift+Esc and sort Browser Task Manager by memory or CPU. Details-tab entries are grouped as msedgewebview2.exe, so they may not identify the host by themselves.
The Bottom Line
Do not treat every msedgewebview2.exe entry as a fault. Identify the host application, close or update it, and use Edge’s Browser Task Manager when Edge is the host. Disable Edge background activity, check graphics acceleration, isolate extensions, repair or reset Edge, and test a fresh profile only for Edge-specific problems. If another application repeatedly causes the memory spike, its embedded content or installation—not the shared WebView2 Runtime—needs attention.
