That distinction helps choose the next step: repair the app and check its dependencies if it is the only one affected; consider Windows system-file repair if multiple apps fail or Windows seems unstable. The code is a clue, not a diagnosis, and no single fix is guaranteed.
First, check how widespread the error is
- Restart Windows, then try opening the affected application again.
- Note whether the error appears in just that application or in several unrelated applications.
- Record the exact message and whether it names a DLL or other module. Also note any recent app or Windows changes.
A Microsoft Q&A community response associates error 0xc000007b with “INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT,” but that does not establish one cause for every application or PC. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
If several apps fail, repair Windows system files
When multiple applications fail or Windows appears unstable, check for damaged system files using Microsoft’s recommended DISM-then-SFC sequence. Run these commands in an elevated Command Prompt; do not close the window while a command is still running.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Wait for it to finish. - Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete, then restart Windows and try the affected app again.
Microsoft says to run DISM before SFC because DISM can supply files needed to repair corrupted Windows components. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for details.

If one app fails, repair the app and check its runtimes
Use the app maker’s repair or reinstall process
If other applications work normally, start with the failing app’s official repair or reinstall instructions. Check the app maker’s requirements before installing or changing dependencies; the error alone does not identify which file or package is missing or incompatible.
Install Visual C++ Redistributables only when the app requires them
Some programs built with Microsoft C and C++ tools need Visual C++ runtime libraries. The required package depends on the app: Microsoft says the runtime must be at least as recent as the build tools used, and its architecture must match the application’s target architecture. Ask the app maker which runtime it requires, then use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Do not uninstall every installed runtime as a general fix. Different applications may depend on different side-by-side versions. Microsoft warns against installing a Visual C++ Redistributable that was not downloaded from a Microsoft site or signed by Microsoft; see its Redistributable installation troubleshooting guidance.
Avoid unofficial DLL downloads
Do not download individual DLL files from third-party sites or copy unknown files over DLLs in Windows folders. A file with the right name may still be the wrong version or architecture, and replacing system files can create additional problems. Use the application maker’s installer or repair process, or an official Microsoft runtime package when the app requires one.

If the error remains
Contact the application’s vendor if its repair or reinstall process does not resolve the problem, or if DISM and SFC leave the issue unresolved. Include the exact error message, app name and version, Windows version, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, recent changes, and any named faulting or missing module. This information can help the vendor identify the app-specific cause; the available Microsoft guidance does not provide a universal decision tree for every 0xc00007b failure.
