If a Steam Remote Play Together invite will not work, first confirm the game supports the feature and that both players are online. Then have the host launch the game and send the invite through the in-game Steam overlay. If the friend still cannot join, check Steam’s firewall permissions, network restrictions, and router path. If the session connects but stutters, troubleshoot stream quality separately.
1. Confirm the game and session are ready
Remote Play Together lets a host invite Steam friends to play a supported local co-op game remotely; invited friends do not need to own or launch the game. It will not work with a game that does not support the feature. Check the game’s Steam store details for Remote Play Together support. Steam Support’s Remote Play guide explains the eligibility and invitation process.
- Update Steam on both computers.
- On the host computer, launch the game at least once and confirm it runs.
- Make sure the host is in the game and the friend appears online in Steam.
- Open the Steam overlay while in the game, open the friends list, and invite the friend to Remote Play Together.
These steps are for Remote Play Together. Remote Play Anywhere has a different setup process.
2. If the invite fails or the computers do not see each other, check the firewall
A Steam or game update can change which executable needs network access, so a firewall rule that previously worked may become stale. Steam advises removing outdated Steam executable permissions and allowing Steam to request current permissions. After changing firewall or security settings, restart Steam. Do not leave the firewall disabled; if you briefly disable it as a diagnostic test, turn it back on and correct the permissions. See Steam’s firewall guidance.

Remote Play ports
Steam’s dedicated streaming guidance lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, plus TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Its general required-ports FAQ describes Remote Play as using UDP local ports 27031–27036 and TCP local port 27036. The dedicated streaming list is the clearest Remote Play-specific reference. Allow Steam through the firewall rather than opening ports indiscriminately; router and firewall controls vary, so consult their documentation or a network administrator if you need to adjust rules. Other games can require additional ports. Steam Remote Play and Steam Link network settings provide the port details.
3. Check whether the network blocks Remote Play
Some networks prevent devices from connecting to one another or block the traffic Steam needs. Steam says Remote Play is not supported on public, workplace, school or university, and guest networks; networks that require a gateway login; or networks with access-point/client isolation enabled. On a managed network, ask the administrator whether Steam traffic is blocked or isolation is enabled. You may not have permission to change those settings yourself. See Steam’s suggested network settings.

At home, a router restart or a test on another network may help identify where the problem lies, but neither is a guaranteed fix. Steam also recommends checking service status, firewalls, background applications, and router connectivity in its network troubleshooting and router guidance. Only bypass or restart equipment when it is safe and practical to do so.
4. If the session connects, troubleshoot stuttering separately
A friend who joins successfully but sees freezes or stutter has a stream-quality problem, not an invite or discovery failure. Steam recommends Ethernet for the best streaming results. If you are on Wi-Fi, testing a wired connection can show whether wireless instability is involved; it will not fix an unsupported game, blocked firewall rule, or restricted network. Steam also notes that 5 GHz Wi-Fi may be less congested than 2.4 GHz, and recommends reducing streaming quality or bandwidth if needed.

For a more specific clue, Steam’s Remote Play network FAQ says the performance overlay’s cyan network-time line can show spikes associated with stuttering or freezing. Review that line while the problem occurs, then test one change at a time. The full guidance is in Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings.

VPNs, firewalls and security software, IP filtering or blocking tools, and bandwidth-heavy peer-to-peer or other background programs can interfere with Steam connections.
