If Steam closes as soon as you open DroidDeck, first check Android’s child-process restriction. If Steam opens but a game will not, check that game’s compatibility and anti-cheat support. For slow performance, work out whether the Steam interface, the game, or the device after it heats up is the bottleneck. Start by confirming your device meets DroidDeck’s Android and GPU requirements.
Check that your Android device is supported
Before reinstalling DroidDeck or changing game settings, verify your Android version and GPU. The DroidDeck project README lists Android 9 or newer and a supported Adreno GPU—Adreno 730 or newer, or an Adreno 8xx—as its baseline. It lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 GPUs as unsupported. The project also cautions that hardware validation is limited and compatibility and performance vary by device, so meeting the baseline is not a guarantee that every game will work well.
Why won’t Steam start, or why does DroidDeck close?
Identify the point where the session ends. Steam closing before Big Picture appears has a different likely cause from a session that fails after Big Picture loads, or a game that returns to its Steam page.
Steam closes before Big Picture appears
Check Android’s Developer Options for Restrict child processes and turn it off. DroidDeck says this restriction can terminate Steam’s child processes. On Android 12 and 13 devices where the setting is unavailable, the first launch may display a Fix it for me action; follow that prompt if it appears. The setting’s location and availability can vary between Android devices.

Big Picture appears, then the session dies
On DroidDeck versions that offer it, try Skip Steam’s xalia helper if the session dies shortly after Big Picture appears. DroidDeck’s older release notes describe this as a response to refused system calls. It is a version-dependent troubleshooting experiment, not a general fix; check whether the option exists in your installed version before looking for it.
Steam stays open, but one game exits
If Steam remains open and only one game returns to its page, investigate that game’s requirements and compatibility rather than treating it as a Steam startup failure. A game may depend on Windows features or anti-cheat support that DroidDeck cannot provide. In particular, DroidDeck’s FAQ says games using kernel-level Windows anti-cheat without Linux Proton support will not run.
Why won’t my Steam game launch in DroidDeck?
For a game-specific failure, check compatibility before changing unrelated device settings. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide suggests checking for system updates, checking the game’s Deck Verified status, forcing a Steam Play compatibility tool for an individual game, and trying the latest Proton. It also recommends reducing graphics settings when performance is poor.

DroidDeck releases document components including FEX, DXVK, and VKD3D-Proton, as well as additional tools such as GE-Proton and proton-cachyos. Their presence does not establish that one component or version is best for every game. If you test a compatibility tool or component, change one relevant option at a time and note the original setting so you can tell whether it helped.
How can I make Steam games run faster in DroidDeck?
First separate a slow Steam interface from a slow game. If possible, note which one is affected and whether performance changes after a sustained session. Avoid switching several performance options at once: DroidDeck describes these controls as optional, and some changes take effect only after a new session starts.

The Steam menus are slow, but games run well
DroidDeck’s release notes describe a Zink lazy-descriptor option as a targeted experiment for slow Steam menus when games are fast. The notes also describe options for pinning Steam UI and game processes to CPU cores. These are project- and version-specific controls, not universal performance improvements; check your installed version and test one change at a time.
The game itself runs slowly
Reduce the game’s graphics settings and test an appropriate Steam Play compatibility tool, following the Steam-side guidance above. DroidDeck release notes also describe sysmem rendering for specified Adreno cases. Do not assume it applies to every GPU or game; use it only if your installed version exposes the option and its description matches your device or situation.

The same older release notes describe disabling seccomp tracing as a possible correctness workaround on kernels that mishandle calls, but say it is slower. Treat it as a narrow troubleshooting option, not a speed setting, and verify that it is available in your installed version before considering it.
Performance drops after the device heats up
On a supported phone, check whether the device gets hot and performance falls after a sustained session. DroidDeck’s compatibility database mentions thermal-throttling monitoring for a supported Adreno 730 phone and active cooling on some handhelds; that is device-specific context, not evidence that every device has the same thermal behavior. An optional clip-on phone cooler is worth considering only if you have confirmed heat-related throttling on a supported phone. Check that a cooler fits securely, has a suitable power source, is tolerable to use, and does not obstruct vents or controls. It will not solve unsupported GPU hardware, Android process restrictions, anti-cheat incompatibility, or a problematic Proton setup.

If the problem persists, reproduce it and record where the failure occurs before opening a project issue. Attach the session folder from Download/DroidDeck/ as DroidDeck requests. Its repository and release notes describe diagnostics including device.txt, app.log, crash.log, session.log, wayland.log, and Steam logs where applicable.
